My Brilliant Career DVD
What a wonderful story set in turn of 20th century Australia. A glimpse of what life was like in all levels of society. Judy Davis is magnificent as a young girl trying to find herself - ironically about the same time as the woman's suffragest movement in the U.S. - she struggles with homelife in the bush but also has the opportunity to live with her wealthy grandmother and learn about the finer, uppety classes too. She falls in love with Sam O'Neill but there's where I stop because it's a wonderful story that's rarely viewed in this country. I highly recommend it! Oh yes, it's a true story, by the way. I can't wait to read the memoir it's based upon! I was fortunate to find that on ebay too!What a wonderful story set in turn of 20th century Australia. Story of longing and untold aspiration
Sybylla is a young woman of the Australian outback, who is always at odds with her harsh environment and particularly with her mother. She finally gets a respite by being sent off to the fine estate of her grandmother near Sydney where she can find appreciation and a finer way of life. She meets a neighbor, who runs his own place and despite her lack of encouragement, other that wanting to be just his friend, he falls for her. At this juncture, her mother sends for her tobe a tutor to a slovenly but prosperous family with whom her father, a hopeless Dr k, is indebted. Sybylla’s destiny is up for grabs, and her real interest in the arts—writing and music—is put on hold.Sybylla is a young woman of the Australian outback, who is always at odds with her harsh environment and particularly with her mother. Comic and appropriate.
I tried to tape this movie twice and it was cut off before the ending. The movie, characters and acting was so engaging that I had to buy it to find out how it ended. Love the movie and the time period in which it was set. Excellent!
