I didn't want to like this movie. It is a parody of Bob Hope and Martha Raye, who toured in all of our various wars and skirmishes especially at Christmas. But Bette Midler especially stole my heart as Dixie Leonard, a struggling singer who teams up with Eddie Sparks (James Caan), already famous as a comedian and song and dance man. He hates her at first, but his writer Uncle Art (George Segal) convinces him to let her stay. They are an uneasy duo, as they fuss throughout the entire movie and eventually make love to each other. But they make up not only an entertainment phenomenon but also have a tremendous effect on each others' lives. The story starts with World War II, when the country was all for the war, and ends up with Vietnam, where the country was divided about the war. In between, Korea brought some danger and mixed feelings about that war. But Dixie's life particularly was affected by all of them. You see, her husband played by Arliss Howard was eventually killed in WWII, leaving her a widow with a small boy, Danny. Eddie sparks has a huge impact on Danny, who grows up during all of their entertaining years and eventually graduates from the Citadel, a military school. While Dixie and Eddie are entertaining in Vietnam, Danny dies massacred with lots of shrapnel in his mother's arms. At this point we are all in tears. The 1940s music is very entertaingly done by Bette Midler. We get to hear "When's That Character Coming Back?", "Baby, It's Cold Outside", "I Remember You", and "Some Stuff Like That There" and many more. My personal favorite is "In My Life," which is sung during the Vietnam era. I have seen this movie twice now, and it is becoming more and more endearing to me. Never a fan of Bob Hope and Martha Raye, I do realize what a great impact people like that had on our troops who need our support whether we like the war or not. This movie is my favorite Bette Midler movie. She is raucous as usual but she really played her heart out in a part that received all the wounds of this story.Vollständige Rezension lesen
A great movie that transports you back in time, James Caan and Bette Milder pull off a amazing duo as their song and dance performances will spell bound you into remembering what it would've been like in those times when this country was faced with one if its worst fears during war times and just how important moral and support for the troops was.
