Product Information

Anne Enright is a dazzling writer of international stature and one of Ireland's most singular voices. Now she delivers The Gathering , a moving, evocative portrait of a large Irish family and a shot of fresh blood into the Irish literary tradition, combining the lyricism of the old with the shock of the new. The nine surviving children of the Hegarty clan are gathering in Dublin for the wake of their wayward brother, Liam, drowned in the sea. His sister, Veronica, collects the body and keeps the dead man company, guarding the secret she shares with him--something that happened in their grandmother's house in the winter of 1968. As Enright traces the line of betrayal and redemption through three generations her distinctive intelligence twists the world a fraction and gives it back to us in a new and unforgettable light. The Gathering is a daring, witty, and insightful family epic, clarified through Anne Enright's unblinking eye. It is a novel about love and disappointment, about how memories warp and secrets fester, and how fate is written in the body, not in the stars.

Reviews
In the supercharged beauty of her oddly brittle, spiky sentences, you her the cadences of the incomparable Don DeLillo....The penetrating exploration of domestic relationships, especially among women, calls to mind...Anne Tyler., Anne Enright's style is as sharp and brilliant as Joan Didion's; the scope of her understanding is a wide as Alice Munro's; her sympathy for her characters is as tender and subtle as Alice McDermott's; her vision of Ireland is as brave and original as Edna O'Brien's. The Gathering is her best book.

This is a very nice book! It was printed and bound in the UK in 1971 and it looks like it’s been taken care of. A little pricey, but well worth it. Jonathan Edward’s essay and observations on The Trinity are without a doubt in my mind the best explanation we can have as human beings. He’s not 100% right in his findings, but no one is with such a mystery. I am very glad I was able to snag this book. It’s rare to find it in a vintage print like this. Thanks for the fast and nicely packed shipping.

  • Only if you enjoy reading the opinion of self absorbed persons would one find this worth the time.

Another negative slam against the featured mother figure, this one extends to the maternal grandmother in the author's opinion. One has to wonder if the author has a personal vendetta against her own mother, as this seems to be common thread in her other writings. Not an enjoyable read, as the character narrating most of the book, has a fairly distorted view of life, and relating to others....a very self absorbed character, to say the least.

  • Character development fuzzy.

The overall story was interesting, but it was hard to figure out where it was going. The development of the main character was at times confusing and vague. When I finished the book, I was still wondering where the character was going, and what her deal was.

  • Not a favorite of mine

I did not like the book. I thought it was difficult to read and keep my attention. I bought it for a book club discussion.

  • The Gathering by Anne Enright

I did not like this book at all and did not finish reading it. I found it boring and very difficult to follow.
