In the early days of World War II people would be having fun with their families along the Jersey shore. They may not have paid much attention to the ship lazily making its way up the coast until it suddenly explodes. Another of the many victims of the Nazi U-boats as they sought to cut off much needed supplies to the British Isles. Day and night the merchant fleet would be in the Submarine Commander's crosshairs. An ill-equipped U.S. Navy Coast Guard would do everything within it meager means to combat the devastation. Homer Hickam (Rocket Boys, The Coalwood Way, Sky of Stone and others)details the valiant true life efforts of the Guard. I bought this book for a friend who has served in the Coast Guard for seven years. It is a remarkable history lesson. Be warned: it is a tough book to read only because it is a losing battle much of the time. Where's Hollywood? This a great true story worthy of the silver screen.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is very well written. I am now informed about the Nazi cruelty of others, or reminded, that is.

After I saw a memorial headstone in an Alvin Texas cemetery to the men who died on the Tanker Bensen in April 1942, I became interested in what was called torpedo junction. I ordered this book off of Ebay and was very pleased with a well written account of the Uboat war in 1942 in the American waters.
