The Revell Black Diamond ship is another item that is riding on the recent wave of pirate popularity. It does not really represent any real ship at all, being an amalgamation of design features of late 17th and early 18th century ships. As a kit, it is fairly well engineered, though you might want a little experience with model building before attempting it. There are a couple of fit problems, namely the lower hull to the upper. Revell states that the model has a one piece hull, when in fact that is not the case. The lower hull is one piece, but in total there are six pieces, including the rudder, that make up the hull. Detail is adequate, if a bit heavy. Now, for the downside. As previously stated, the engineering of the kit is decent enough, however the model has some flaws that border on serious to comical. On the comical side is the scale. It is far from 1/350. Since it doesn't really represent any real ship, I had to rely on what data I have on ships from that period. The result is that this model's scale range lies between 1/144 and 1/240. In other words, it is a larger scale, a significantly larger scale. There is no particular prototype here. The ship mounts a total of 32 guns, making it a fifth rate or a frigate. There are some details that seem poorly thought out, such as the stern galleries. The hull, when viewed from the side, looks fairly typical for a ship from the 1670's through the late 18th century. In plan view (looking down on the model), it has a hull that is more befitting an earlier vessel. It even has a flat stern; while not uncommon for 17th century ships, by the 18th century a rarity. The masts have the shrouds and ratlines molded as solid pieces from the tops ("crow's nest") up. This really looks bad; they should have, at least, been separate pieces. Elsewhere, there are some features that are awkward. The headrails, at the bow of the ship, are dead vertical; if one knows where the nautical term "head" comes from, then you know why this is a problem. The deck has details that are from a variety of periods, including late in the age of wooden sailing ships. There is a wheel, which would be accurate for 18th century, but not as common in the 17th. None of this, though, should be taken as real negatives. As a beginners kit, it is fine, but some of those details will be bothersome to anyone who has built at least one sailing ship model. With a lot of work, it might be possible to build this up into a more scale like model, but out of the box, it really should be consider not much more than a well designed toy. Oh so beautiful and easy to assemble but far from perfect. Ship only balances on the base -- is not secure. The top and bottom sections of the hull do not fit perfectly together and stay together as you hold it to mount surfaces pieces. Some pieces come loose as you work to fit other pieces in place. Instructions tell you pieces are designed to fit tight in place only on the very initial insertion. Three pieces of the masts do not snap in place at all and will require glue -- the holes for snapping them are improperly formed. One snap point I mistakenly trimmed off a mast not realizing it was needed for a side mounted mast. I will have to glue it. Masts have many protruding points to trim off that get to be confusing after a while which get trimmed and which get saved. I did not install sails. To me the ship looks better with no extended sails as though it is in port. Authentic, beautiful, cheap, a fabulous deal, so easy to assemble with no glue required, certainly not perfect at this price. Buy multiples and maybe you will get one set between them of all perfect parts. Build a fleet! Vollständige Rezension lesen

This is a good first kit for sailing ship building. It goes together easily. Some parts fit more snugly and are more durable if they are cemented. I am currently adding the sails. I intend to add tie down thread rigging to the bottom corners of the sails. I cannot fully rig the ship without full instructions. This model requires minimal painting. I painted the barrels of the deck guns gloss black and will probably paint the gold leaf on the bow filigree.
