  • A must have for your summer reading list!!

This book was SO lovely I could not stop reading it. The reader is transported to 1600's Holland during the time of famous painter Vermeer. Our entire senses are felt through Griet, the newly hired maid to the painter's family. The author writes with such rich detail one can see the boats floating along the canal, taste the roast beef, feel Griet's sore chapped hands from laundering, smell the paints and linseed oil, and hear the children playing outside. I came away from it with total admiration for how the story was told. The author has managed to weave a fictional story from one of Vermeers most celebrated paintings. I love how Griet stuggles within herself to make the right choices. A wonderful coming of age story. It is tragic, dramatic, and in the end...redemption. For anyone who has ...

  • Well worth the read!

This is a well written work of historical fiction. Having visited the city of Delft recently, I was excited to read about many familiar places that are still there today. The story was intriguing, especially since it is written from the point of view of a 16 year old girl.

  • Interesting but pretty boring

To say honestly, the book was dull to me. Perhaps this is because I don’t know anything about the “famous” painter Johannes Vermeer and his paintings, but really, nothing much happens in the book. It’s very vivid, luminous, and deep, but unless you’re a reader of books, this book’s not going to interest you too much. I have to say though that this book was very interesting and I didn’t regret any of the pages I read. It’s not a literary disaster like Dicey’s Song (thank God) and it’s not a bad read but it’s not too good of a read either, at least to me. Some people I know loved this book and couldn’t stop reading. Others find it extremely boring and couldn’t finish a 100 pages of it. I guess you’d have to read it to find out for yourself. For me, personally, I am in the middle ground. It ...

  • Girl with a Pearl Earring

I really enjoyed this book . It is the story of a girl forced to work as a maid for a large family, who husband was a painter. She had to work to help support her family after her father became blind during an accident at his work. This was written in the 1600, Holland. It was about the relationships between the maid and other help in the house, the painter, his wife and the mother-in-law, and the children of the couple. It also tells of her friendship with the son of the butcher. This was a book read for a book club. This book received great ratings overall by the club. Enjoyable read!
