The 1999 release of Jane's USAF combat simulator continues the company's dedication to titles centering on both air and naval combat. Players have four battle campaigns from which to choose that cover historical actions (Vietnam or Iraq), a futuristic "what if" action (Germany), and a fully developed strategic exercise in United States skies. Working with the United States Air Force in designing the simulation, Jane's offers eight specific workhorses of the USAF fleet of combat aircraft. From the Vietnam war era, you can choose the F-105D Thunderchief fighter/bomber (a.k.a. "Thud") or the F-4E Phantom II, the most utilized air-to-air combat jet fighter in the world since the 1950s. Fly missions over Iraq and replicate the challenges of Operation Desert Storm in the powerful F-15C Eagle and its attack variant F-15E Eagle. Train in the skies over the U. S.using the awesome power and maneuverability of the F-16C Falcon and the A-10A Thunderbolt II (Warthog) with its 30mm Avenger Cannon ready to take on all tanks and ground forces. Accept future-based missions in Europe specifically in the skies over Germany, in two stealth aircraft including the F-117A Nighthawk and the F-22A Raptor. The game uses stereoscopic satellite data to render detailed terrain vistas and offers a vast array of in-flight assistance ranging from Head Up Displays to targeting aids. Jane's USAF is fully compatible with JanesCombat.Net, their proprietary multi-player Internet gaming site. Virtual fighter pilots seeking in-your-face human interaction can find the service (supports up to 16 players per game) at www.ea.com/cf_janes/jcn/. Another of Jane's trademark comprehensive manuals ships with the game and covers in minute detail topics such as the game's interface, cockpit characteristics, flight and navigation, combat modes, multi-player setups and missions. Other sections give historical backgrounds, aircraft specifications (including the Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum), and appendices dealing with acronyms, abbreviations, a full glossary, and preference windows. For fans who like to design custom missions, Jane's USAF offers a Quick Mission Editor that allows for fast mission creation. A great ALL sim :)
Jane's USAF is a fabulous old sim. Jane's was a company that knew what flyers wanted and deliverd products above and beyond. USAF has awsome features and a variety of planes to choose from. The sim also features satelite image terrain which will blow your mind. Each aircrafts characteristics are extremely real and each plane even comes with it's own cockpit! With Jane's USAF you feel as though you are really flying with the Air Force and you will find yourself sweating in the heat of the battle. This sim today is now beating some of the most current sims thanks to a group that has taken the sim and made some terrific mods for it. Within these mods, you can now fly over 100 aircraft with most of them having their own cockpits, new terrain, advanced flight models, and much more! I highly ... Jane's USAF is a fabulous old sim. Janes USAF (best of the bunch)
Although all jane's products range from good to very good, this one is excellent! Jane's USAF features a very smart and clean installation. The entire presentation gives you a feel of a high-quality, professional product right out of the box and this feeling continues once you move into the game's opening sequence. This sequence shows the different aircraft available in various flight and combat situations all accompanied by stirring patriotic/war style music. Sure, the game's the important thing, but crisp and clean installation and presentation shows an attention to detail that bodes well for the overall product. There are eight USAF aircraft to chose from and they cover the jet era from Korea to the modern day. As such you can't expect the precision of simulation found in a game that ... Although all jane's products range from good to very good, this one is excellent! Jane's USAF features a very smart and clean installation. This sequence shows the different aircraft available in various flight and combat situations all accompanied by stirring patriotic/war style music. Sure, the game's the important thing, but crisp and clean installation and presentation shows an attention to detail that bodes well for the overall product. There are eight USAF aircraft to chose from and they cover the jet era from Korea to the modern day. As such you can't expect the precision of simulation found in a game that concentrates on just one aircraft but there is enough of a difference in cockpit appearance and perceived flight handling that you certainly feel as if you are flying different aircraft. The manual is a good, beefy example of what a manual should be and gives details on all of the aircraft. Each plane has information on the overall program, the variants and details on equipment, armament and avionics. The information for both the allies and enemy, along with details on helicopters, support aircraft, ground units and weapons can also be found in the Jane's Reference within the game. It all seems very complete (although I've never heard a Mig. 17 referred to as a "Fresco" before) but if you want to know the difference between an F-15E and an F-15C or the different types of ZSU anti-aircraft guns, then this is the place. Fundamentally the aircraft fly well and it is hard to do anything particularly stupid in them although I certainly tried. Short of not taking into account the occasional mountain, the only things you have to worry about are flying the plane smoothly and the opposing forces. But Jane's USAF tries for as much accuracy as possible, even on the runway. Other jets are also taxiing their way to the runway and you must move at an appropriate speed so as to not run into them. Graphically the game seems to have concentrated on the planes and the results are readily apparent. While up high in the air and battling opposing aircraft, Jane's USAF looks great. Closer to the ground there are a few problems with odd texture flickers every now and again. This happens even on my high-end machine which is a little disappointing -- especially during air to ground attacks. But the most important thing is the planes and the developers have obviously concentrated their efforts here. However it would be nice to fly through a canyon that really looks like a canyon rather than a flat texture map with a couple of trees. Buildings and airfields, complete with runways, hangers and a tower, look very sharp. Once in the campaigns, you'll begin to notice the different terrains in the game. The lush green vegetation of Vietnam contrasts with the searing deserts of Kuwait or Las Vegas. If you're smart, you'll let the game take you through a number of training missions. These introductory training missions reveal the standard presentation for each mission.

Best simulation EVER.
I love this game. Very accurate depiction of all aircraft, the game even has the classical Jane's list and specific description, history, pictures, details of all military equipment used in the game, from the plane that you fly to the tank you are blowing up. The graphics are excellent in this game. Everything is, I dare say, flawless. Realistic missions, smart AI, even mission editor and voice recognition. A must buy if you like aircraft simulation.I love this game.
