PULITZER PRIZE FINALIST NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST WINNER OF THE RIDENHOUR PRIZE "Essential reading for anyone concerned about how America got Afghanistan so wrong. A devastating, well-honed prosecution detailing how our government bungled the initial salvo in the so-called war on terror, ignored attempts by top Taliban leaders to surrender, trusted the wrong people, and backed a feckless and corrupt Afghan regime . . . It is ultimately the most compelling account I've read of how Afghans themselves see the war." --The New York Times Book Review In a breathtaking chronicle, acclaimed journalist Anand Gopal traces the lives of three Afghans caught in America's war on terror. He follows a Taliban commander, who rises from scrawny teenager to leading insurgent; a U.S.-backed warlord, who uses the American military to gain wealth and power; and a village housewife trapped between the two sides, who discovers the devastating cost of neutrality. Through their dramatic stories, No Good Men Among the Living stunningly lays bare the workings of America's longest war and the truth behind its prolonged agony.

He has a deep knowledge of the rural south, took great risks in visiting some of the most dangerous insurgent areas and has conducted thousands of hours of interviews.... His book should be a model for all our analysis of intervention, from Libya to contemporary Iraq." --Rory Stewart, New Statesman (UK) "A brilliant, incisive work of storytelling and analysis. Of all the recent books on Afghanistan, this one stands out like a bright shining light, revealing the truth of the war from the ground up. • No Good Men Among The Living

Great piece of insightful writing. The interviews and narrative provide a nuanced and balanced perspective on the complexities of military engagement and state craft in an ancient culture that is only very poorly, narrowly, and shallowly understood or appreciated by our Government (DoD, State, CIA, etc). I spent three years on active duty in a nearby country, three deployments to the Persian Gulf, and 6 months in Kabul, and I commend Anand Gopaul for his bravery and integrity that resulted in a body of work that should be read by anybody who has not spent time imbedded in this part of the world and who wants to get a genuine feel for the inner lives of the people who inhabit the Middle East and Central Asia.

I found it to be very readable. It gives you a clear sense of what it was like from three different perspectives. Worth the read
