Product Information

Sci-fi role-players return to the Star Ocean for the first time in The Last Hope, a prequel game set centuries before the original game's story began. Gameplay begins in the year S.D. 10, or about 2087 A.D. Humanity has waged World War III, and Earth is the greatest casualty. Lands have been upturned, civilizations have been razed, and survivors realize that they must find a new home, on a new planet. Players follow the adventures of young Edge Maverick and Reimi Saionji, two childhood friends who have grown up to lead humanity's first intergalactic mission, in a spaceship called Calnus.

At times, piloting the ship themselves -- a first in the Star Ocean series -- players have some choice as to which planets they visit and which adventures they encounter there. Exploration takes place from a standard third-person perspective. In combat, the view can change as players shift from character to character, and is accented with zooms and cutaways to display special attack graphics and other effects. Between battles, role-playing as the captain in conversations with other crew members allows players to build rapport between the characters, which lets them work better as a team and unlocks additional strengths and abilities in combat. Cut-scenes help to fill in the story between the action.

Battles play out in real-time. Players can control up to four party members, flipping between them with the trigger button. Each character has different strengths, weaknesses, and special abilities, which can be enhanced and customized with combat experience. The game's "BEAT" ("Battle Exalted Action Type") system lets players assign different general fighting styles to characters, pushing them to behave more aggressively, defensively, or to focus on special attacks, for example. Increasingly sophisticated BEAT scripts become available as characters level up. Star Ocean: The Last Hope also introduces "Rush" gauges, which build slowly in regular battle and allow characters to perform distinct, powerful special moves when full.

Originally released on Xbox 360, the PS3 version of Star Ocean: The Last Hope gets "International" suffixed onto its name because: it includes both English and Japanese voices; it offers Japanese, English, French, German, and Italian subtitles; and it comes with soundtracks featuring dozens of original songs.

  • Old School Action-JRPG

Star Ocean is one of those Action-JRPGs sagas that you either love or hate from the start due to the commitment you have to put into it. The game itself is loaded with story, either to be read or watched through cut-scenes, so if you are not willing to sit through a lot of those, this might not be for you. Playstyle is real time action, as you move through the fields and fight monsters. You can get other characters to join your quest and can play as them by switching between them while in battle. Each of those characters have their own fighting style and mechanics so you need to learn to play them as some are more effective controlled by you in certain situations, rather than driven by the AI. You can assign them "combat behaviours" to be used when you are not actively using them. As its ...

  • star ocean the last hope international ps3 review

graphics - they look great. no problems at all. environments are large and fun to explore. character models look pretty good. story- sci-fi type story. the story is a bit long and with lengthy dungeons you may forget what is going on. otherwise it is pretty good. it is your typical jrpg story where teens with crazy hair save the world and yada yada yada....and if you don't like the story you can skip the scenes and the game will tell you what happened in a paragraph of text. gameplay- this is where the game shines. excellent real time battle system. can control any character during battle. frame rate is steady. if you enjoy the battle system then the game is worth buying. ***slight learning curve involved but not that tough once you get the hang of it. also there are different ...

  • One of the best RPG experiences I have had on this generation of consoles

The only thing that is keeping this from being a 5/5 is the camera control when in the field. It takes some getting used to and there is no option that I could find to adjust whether you wanted it inverted or normal. The characters are believable and voiced incredibly well, having the Japanese voices is just icing on the cake. The story is something that is very out there yet entirely plausible given the direction we are actually heading in the world, which makes it that much more interesting. Combat is fluid and relatively easy to grasp, yet there is a lot you can get into to make it a lot more involved with the bonus system after battles and with the combo system they have put in place. Boss battles can be brutal if you are simply an attack first heal later kinda player. All in all ...

  • "Pretty great" RPG for the PS3... Why have I purchased it 6 times....?

This is probably no new revelation to gamers who read reviews but this is a WONDERFUL, classic RPG with a fantastic battle system. It plays like a great PS2 RPG. I'd give it 5 stars, but the consensus seems to be somewhat the same... This game seems to get repetitive in scenery and battle. It also has a somewhat generic feel to it. The music is also not particularly absorbing, so.... Laughably, I have bought this game 6 times now (literally) and sold it each time. Sound crazy?... To you RPG fans, you may understand. I'm still looking for a great and absorbing "good 'ol SquareEnix game". Sadly, I think I keep wanting to like this game for the reason. GIVE it a try! It has decent resale value, and you just may love it.

  • A staple to any RPG fans collection.

This game is spectacular. I have always felt the Star Ocean franchise has never gotten it's due credit from critics. Pros- Great game play- It may take a couple fights to get used to the new blindside system and figuring out how the character attacks depending on the targets location (IE: on the ground, in the air, ect), but the game play is very fun. It also contains 4 differing characters at a time, and with a large list of playable characters you can create many differing parties. Amazing graphics - The animations during the fighting, the beginning cut scene, the beautiful environments, this game really has it all. It is kind of engineered to look, not cartoon like, but more like "fantasy". It came our nearly the same time is Final Fantasy 13 and that game looked more realistic, ...
