I give John Wayne credit for getting out of his late 1960's - early 1970's comfort-zone and seemingly working pretty hard on one of his last films, "McQ". Wayne left his usual crew of co-stars, directors and Western themes to star in a contemporary cop drama. Directed by the expert John Sturges, Wayne's age and toupee are the only slightly-weak links in this film with a strong script and an expert musical score. Wayne's character is clearly supposed to be a little younger, faster and stronger than the Duke was by this point, but there is no denying his screen presence, and the fact that he worked hard on this film, doing a lot of driving and light action sequences he probably could have left to stuntmen and far-off camera shots. I can't really name a different actor to go in the role, since the part was too close to Clint Eastwood's "Dirty Harry" to allow him to play it. With a good director, great music, and a real star in the lead, "McQ" is frankly a lot more satisfying than most contemporary films. And, the DVD comes with a fairly substantial "making of" featurette for the time. -RDMVollständige Rezension lesen
I bought this DVD because the price was affordable and it was brand new, not used. This film wasn't one of John Wayne's greatest, but I still enjoy watching it because I always get a kick out of seeing John Wayne - a BIG name movie star - acting in scenes filmed throughout my hometown of Seattle, Wa., especially when one of the scenes took place at Pacific Medical Center when it was known back then as the US Public Service Hospital. My father was employed there at the time and he remembered John Wayne filming there. Overall, the DVD was worth buying.
I bought this DVD because I do enjoy seeing John Wayne in other movie genres besides Westerns. Also, this particular movie, McQ, is very seldom seen on regular TV or cable networks. This movie was made late in John Wayne's career. He didn't move as quickly as he did in his earlier roles, but he still managed to be a bigger-than-life presence in most scenes. You can tell that he still wanted to act, and gave an honest effort as McQ. I would also say that a leading role as this might give you an idea as to what Mr. Wayne may have been like in real life; maybe more so than his Western characters. The movie itself was a bit lacking in some details, such as not really telling us why some characters were so knowledgeable as informants. But, I still enjoyed watching Mr. Wayne as a big-city cop, and I'm glad I added this movie to my John Wayne collection.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This great detective thriller features John Wayne in one of his finest performances as Lon McQ, a tough as nails Seattle Cop. His superb co-star is a Brewster Green 1973 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am...which they unmercifully destroy two thirds of the way thru the movie! I bought this movie for the Trans Am...cause I own a '73 myself. This flick shows how tough those old Pontiacs were! So, if you want to see a great car in action in a good movie, go ahead and buy McQ. RAH
John Wayne is the consumate American Hero. Someone who exemplified True Grit. I, like other fans of the Duke, like to watch his movies and remember what it was like to watch a good movie and go away feeling good. Even a bad movie could be made better with the acting style of the Duke. In this movie, John Wayne is Detective McQ who's partner is gunned down. McQ searches for his partners killer, in typical John Wayne style, and finds himself immersed in a large conspiracy. It seems, at the time, it was John Wayne vs Clint Eastwood. But unfortunately for the Duke, Clint was younger and appealed to a younger audience. The Duke will always be, to cinema geeks like me, a true American hero.
