This book brings nothing new to the story of the immigrant family. Neither does it bring much in the way of "fine writing." I'm not the best writer, and English is even my first language, so this second critique is less important to me, but after reading a book I do think it is important to feel as though it was not a waste of time. This book doesn't really start until the last couple pages, but luckily, it's a very quick read, so it doesn't take too long to find the few kernels of insight in it. Read it if you have a day to kill or a few bucks to throw away, but there are better ways to experience the struggles of an immigrant family--ways that don't feel like a complete waste.
This book was fantastic and a must read. Even though set in a different era, much of what Pancho went through in the book still happens today. I have a whole new respect for those students in schools trying to learn English as a second language, which Pancho struggled with at school. I found myself feeling all sorts of emotions throughout the book and appreciated the candor and humor of Jimenez. It is interesting to see how life as a migrant worker in his youth shaped who he is today. The best thing I walked away with is how Jimenez never paints himself nor his family as victims of circumstance, but as a family trying to do their best to live a better life. This will be a yearly 'read aloud' for my high school Spanish students as a way to open their eyes to those who come across our borders in hopes living the American dream, but find themselves just trying to survive off of their meager earnings.Vollständige Rezension lesen
The book was about the life of an immigrant child. It is an autobiographical novel by Francisco Jimenez based in part on his journey from Mexico to the U.S.A. The book is narrated from the child’s point of view and follows the life of young Panchito and his family as they move from one location to another to harvest crops in the United States. This book give me a lot of new words in English. I think the people should be read this book because the story is very interesting that is really life in 1940.
The used book like a new one.
