This is an excellent book on the breed, giving a lot of good indepth information. It covers the breed's beginnings and major dogs and bloodlines from the beginning up until the time when the book was first published. Pictures of a number of the most famous and important dogs of the breed are included. It has a VERY informative section on genetic and heredity terminology, as well as an equally informative section on the various breeding methods (linebreeding, backcrossing, etc) most commonly used by serious breeders, and gives pedigree examples. It compares American dogs and imports, and has a section covering America's national specialty show. Excellent coverage of the standard is given (and Hart's drawings illustrating ideal and faulty examples have been used in many other books on the breed). Judging is covered (Hart himself was a very well known judge). An overview of AKC obedience levels and exercises is given (although if you want to compete, get an updated set of the AKC obedience regulations because the rules have changed a few times since this book was written, these are available for free at dog shows, or from the AKC). Schutzhund is covered. Buying a puppy, adult, or imported dog is also covered. Information on feeding is covered and Hart is one of the few who addresses the fact that Nylabones are the safest chew toy to give a German Shepherd dog. Basic care is covered. Also, breeding and whelping is covered and a chart showing the phases of a bitch's heat cycle is given. A gestation chart showing the average time a litter will be born after 1st mating, this chart covers the whole year and you can look at the date of the first mating and see the date that is 63 days later, and know when to expect puppies. Health care is very well covered, and there is even a first aid section. In the back, lists of Grand Victors/Victrixes (annual male/female winner of the German Shepherd Dog Club of America National Specialty) and Siegers and Siegerins (annual male/female winner of the German national breed club (the S.V.) conformation show, is given. Overall, an excellent book by an author who is well known as an authority on the breed.Vollständige Rezension lesen
