Synopsis
1926. Gas is 17 a gallon. Haircuts are 25 cents. And U.S. Route 66--two thousand miles of road and concrete--connects Chicago with Los Angeles, making long-distance travel a reality for millions of Americans. Often called America's Main Street, this famous highway played a key role in the development of U.S. industry and commerce. It offered the prospect of a better life in the West for families trapped in rural poverty along its path. And, by the early 1940s, it was a lifeline in the U.S. war effort. Route 66 quickly became part of the American Dream, generating its own myths and romance and inspiring scores of novelists, poets, artists, moviemakers, and songwriters to weave its image into their work. This compact book follows the path of the Mother Road, reveals its importance, and captures its special magic. More than 240 full-color illustrations reveal the unique culture along the road, from neon signs and historic landmarks to favorite cars and recipes popular along the highway. " Don't be fooled by this small package--within its pages is a colorful, illustrated history of the fabled road and its landmarks ."--Paul Taylor, from the Introduction, 1926. Gas is 17¢ a gallon. • The Mystique of old Route 66

I have wanted to drive Route 66 for years. When I was a youngster and most of it was available, it would have been a snap. Now much of it is paved over and it means entering and leaving the route as it weaves from LA to Chicago. This book with a good, current Route 66 maps helps you understand the romance and quaint hilarity of the road. There are still remnants of small town Main Streets, shop, motels and antique stores. The current map or a guide is necessary, as many of the high points, such as the Victorville CA, Roy Rogers/Dale Evans Museum no longer exists. Meteor Crater in AZ, still beckons to visitors. Cadillac Ranch in TX is sure to wake you up, if you are starting to doze at the wheel. This is a fun book, full of information, recipes and vivid color photos of the Mother Road.

  • Traveling Route 66

Small, handy, and jam packed with interesting information that will be useful in planning my trip along the Mother Road. Don't buy the book for specifics about how to travel the road (e.g., route changes, original alignments, etc.) - you'll need maps or a detailed guide for that. If you just want to get some ideas of what to expect for attractions along the road though, this is a great book. I bought it to help in planning a brief trip or two to some of the more interesting stops on Route 66 and it provided just what I was looking for.

  • Appropriate

If you can overlook the British bias of the author and publisher, the book is rather informative.

  • Postcard Book

I was hoping for something different with maps and so on. Not a poster card book
