Product Information

Guild Wars players go online to take the roles of wizards and warriors in a medieval fantasy world, where they'll battle and adventure on their own, cooperatively, or -- as the title suggests -- in guild warfare against teams of other players. The game world is home to a once-proud kingdom, which has recently been overrun by the forces of evil and chaos. Available player professions include warriors, rangers, monks, mesmers, elementalists, and necromancers, and players are encouraged to choose a combination of any two professions for each character they play. More options become available in a series of planned "chapter" updates to the main game.

Guild Wars features common world areas, such as towns and outposts, where all players can gather and meet, but the game is particularly mission-based. When players embark on a quest, alone or in a small party, a private area of the game world is created for them, and nearly all of the real adventuring takes place in these exclusive territories. More similar to the multiplayer structure of games like Diablo or Dungeon Siege than conventional "massively multiplayer online role-playing games" (or "MMORPGs"), the developers refer to Guild Wars as a "competitive online role-playing game" (or "CORPG").

With its North American operations led by Ultima Online creator Richard Garriott, South Korean publisher NCSoft has been a principal figure in the realm of persistent world gaming, releasing three games -- Linage II, City of Heroes, and Guild Wars -- between spring 2004 and spring 2005. Guild Wars uses a different method for ongoing customer payments than most MMORPGs, however. Players log into the game through the developer's "ArenaNet" service, which works similarly to Blizzard's "Battle.net." The Seattle-based ArenaNet development studio was founded by former member of the Blizzard team.

Instead of requiring a monthly subscription fee, the Guild Wars plan is to release regular expansion "chapters," which advance the game world story but can only be accessed by players who pay for them. While Guild Wars players will have to purchase each new chapter they choose to use, they won't be charged any recurring subscription fees to play the basic version of the game for as long as they'd like, and participating in new chapters is always optional.

  • Great game

I enjoyed playing this game, and discovering new abilities for the many character types. This game was made on a very colorful and appealing landscape, I am sure that it would make a great gift for the holidays. What originally brought me to this game was the fact that it was a very well made game that did NOT charge monthly fees for using their gaming servers. The many things you can do in this game makes it fun for a very long time. Buying new armors and weapon items allows you to show off your money that you earned playing the game. Titles allow players that are truly veterans of the game to show off their talents/experience with titles such as survivor and cartographer. There are several more titles, but those are a good example. Well bottom line: Game is free online , once you buy it, ...

  • Guild wars: prophecies, All around hit?

This game has proven itself in the MMORPG genre, axing a monthly subscription fee, even when the game first retailed at 49.99 it was a great buy. Now with a sizable price drop, averaging anywhere from 19.99-29.99 there is no reason for any fan of MMORPGs to pass this game up. Prophecies is the first installment of the guildwars World, and quite a world it is, With Factions and Nightfall, two new campaigns to following after Prophecies, not to mention Eye of the North, the expansion pack to guild wars, opening up even more should you get tired of the original, though the world of prophecies is a quite large and expansive one, and I’d be hard pressed to tire of it any time soon. The game blends new ideas with old, creating a unique MMO free of spawn camping, and restricts PvP to an ...

  • Guild Wars... Profecies... Great game,

Game is very detailed, whoever created it thought of everything. Great PC online game, and there is not a montly fee to play. There is always a great amount of players online, specially since it has expanded, and created even more space and places with Factions, and now Nightfall out. I've enjoyed now for over 12 months. Guild Wars... I played it more than I did my Xbox... none of them compare to what I have found playing Guild Wars, I've got over 2500 hrs of playtime. Game is very detailed, whoever created it thought of everything. Great PC game, and there is not a montly fee to play.

  • PvP, PvE, GvG its all here

This game has it all. You can play the game out to the end, or just be a Total PvP player. The guild battles are the meat and Potatos of the game. If you like battling in groups pitting your team or guild against other teams or guilds this game is for you. It also has an excellent Player Vs. Environment as well. There are tons of quests and missions to complete. The world is very large to travel in and the graphics are superb. And the best part is: NO MONTHLY FEES!!!

  • Guild Wars, Very good game.

I own this game. Not quite as good as World of Warcraft but still a great game. Graphics are super, game play is fun. The overall storyline isn't as original or as cool as WOW. Missed being able to skill like you can in WOW. You get what you pay for. If you don't want to spend 15 a month, and you want a RPG with PvP than this game is for you.
