This 1993 movie about two young girls growing up in the Southwest has become somewhat of a cult item now. Since the title has been out of print since 2006 and not likely to be reissued, the DVD's are going for a premium price. Trudy Evans is a high-school drop-out who has trouble at home. Her father abandoned the family, the mother does not get along with her and she feels alienated. To help make up for this loss, she turns to "free sex" and eventually gets pregnant. Her sister Shade has a concern about keeping the family together while searching for her real father. She eventually runs into him. Her mother, as well, is searching for companionship. This movie is a well-laid out drama, and it received good reviews from the major critics. Although it was a flop at the box office, it has done well on home video releases in the past. DO NOT get the laserdisc version - the several copies I went through had laser-rot on it. Stick with DVD. Although this is not a movie that will keep you on the "edge of your seat" it is one that will provide interest and good entertainment. This is Allison Anders' first attempt at directing. The story is from Richard Peck's novel "Don't Look and It Won't Hurt." One can watch this movie with a feeling that living in Deming, New Mexico (called "Laramie" in the movie) can be very boring, especially for teenagers who have little to do. The ability to identify with the characters, especially the girls is outstanding. This is a title worth having in your collection, even if it is on VHS. The movie was shot with a "185:1" ratio which is what is used in the DVD. The VHS has full-screen. Since this movie was filmed with a "soft-matte" meaning the viewfinder, not the lens was masked, there is little missing, but more information than the director intended the audience to see. One good HOT example is the love scene between Ione Skye and Robert Knepper who players her newfound boyfriend "Dank." The DVD has the full plate on, so there is little to see in the love scene, but with the VHS version, and the masking plate removed-the full frame exposed, Ione's Skye's breasts and more are seen. Don't look for any of these hot zones in the DVD or Laserdisc. This movie also launched the career of Fairuza Balk, who played the part of Shade. She went on to make more titles. Although Ione Skye was excellent in the role of Trudi, her career took a tumble after this title. Still, now that the title is discontinued and people are becoming more aware of it there is a demand for the DVD. It sells for over $50.00 at Tower.com. The average price is about $40.00 right now - don't look for a Blu-Ray re-release as this film did not sell that well on DVD - still, one never knows. As good as the movie is, Columbia-Tri star would have to find a good reason to spend thousands of dollars to re-master the title to Blu-Ray, which, because of poor DVD sales, I doubt they will attempt. The VHS sales went well, for some strange reason. If you can find the title on E-BAY at a reasonable price (HINT: search for VHS), I highly recommend it.Vollständige Rezension lesen
