This album, the sophomore effort by Steely Dan alum Fagen, is not nearly as enjoyable as The Nightfly (his first effort) but there are a couple of flashes of brilliance on this album; Snowbound and On The Dunes are truly great songs that strike deep. Springtime, Tomorrow's Girls and Florida Room are most definitely enjoyable. The remaining 3 songs are good listening, especially if you are a danfan, but they lack that special something that I have grown accustomed to hearing when I listen to Fagen, Becker or Steely Dan. Overall, a good album and a must have for any Steely Dan fan; Nightfly would have been hard to beat, so I cannot really take away from Fagen on this album, but rather just state that he set the bar a little too high on his first outing.
I loved this album when it was released in 1982. Now I have the cd to play on modern conveniences and it has only improved with time!

I saw the original Steely Dan band on their first tour in December 1972 as an opening act to Frank Zappa's "Grand Wazoo" tour with Tony Duran, George Duke, Ruth Underwood, Jim Gorden, and a dozen other incredible musicians!! To be honest, I wasn't heckling Steely Dan, but in between songs I was constantly screaming "Zappa" so that they would get off stage and let the show actually begin. It wasn't that I didn't like Steely Dan, I just wanted to see Frank and the crew with one of the greatest bands he ever assembled. Little did I know at the time that the opening act would become such a rock/jazz crossover legend and I would become a fan 30 years after when the 70s cover band I was playing in wanted me to learn 8 Dan songs including Reelin'in the Years, Rikki, Josie, etc. I really appreciated the craftsmanship in the arrangements and guitar parts, and started listening to "Dan" and "Don". This CD is a pleasure that shouldn't be missed, the songs have a synchronous tone and build upon each other. Is it the best of Donald Fagen, no he is still recording, and I feel Morph the Cat, the latest, is his best to date. Check this one out, if you can find it for $8.00 delivered it will be a bargain given some of the stuff released now. For some reason when every time I play Fagen at a band break, people like it and ask..."Who?" That they are asking, should be the best recommendation for you to buy this now.Vollständige Rezension lesen
What can be said about the genius of Donald Fagan that hasnt been said already?!? One of the most 'fun' cd's in the Fagan/Steely Dan library! An under the radar album from '98 that will have you tapping your toes and even singing along.Trans island Skyway, Snowbound, On the Dunes, Tomorrows Girls are standout classics, and all are very listenable. Most are recorded and mixed beautifully for top quality audiophile sound also. A great addition to your collection!
Any Steely Dan fan or follower of Donald Fagan's solo work should snap up a copy of Kamakiriad for their personal audio library. This funky-jazzy album is pure delight.
