In the title role (and lots of red makeup), Perlman is pitch-perfect, giving the good-natured misfit a powerful--yet surprisingly sensitive--presence. Blair, Evans, Hurt, and other actors are similarly well cast, rounding out an ensemble intent on retaining the movie's dark yet superbly entertaining tone.

Hellboy- Excellantly played By Perlman!
A entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz. Hellboy files his demonic horns and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine, Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled ... Hellboy is Beautiful to Watch but Bad Movie...
I might not be the best person to review Hellboy because I'm not a hardcore comic book fan (or any kind of comic book fan for that matter). So if you are a Hellboy enthusiast - or simply a comic enthusiast - take what I say with a grain of salt... that said, I do like these theatrical remakes of the comics - Sin City is a favorite of mine if you've read my reviews. So now that my prefacing is out of the way - this is my blunt review of the movie: Hellboy is a visually stunning and overly satisfying film that looks superb on any great television... My praise ends there because the list of no-name actors are not appealing or talented and the storyline drags a little bit. I've heard rave reviews about Hellboy from critics, comic fans, non-comic fans alike - and I've heard really negative ... I might not be the best person to review Hellboy because I'm not a hardcore comic book fan (or any kind of comic book fan for that matter). So if you are a Hellboy enthusiast - or simply a comic enthusiast - take what I say with a grain of salt... that said, I do like these theatrical remakes of the comics - Sin City is a favorite of mine if you've read my reviews. My praise ends there because the list of no-name actors are not appealing or talented and the storyline drags a little bit. I've heard rave reviews about Hellboy from critics, comic fans, non-comic fans alike - and I've heard really negative reviews as well. I fall in between - the movie is worth a watch purely for the asthetics - but thats really about it. I couldnt get into the story and was rather frustrated by the acting and plot. But you decide and then write a review because I'd love to read it!

My family loves this movie
This is a very dark movie in the comic book character series. For small kids it may be too dark, violent, and scary. My family loves the movie, especially Abe. We want more Abe. Ron Pearlman is a very good Hellboy. Humor is thrown into the movie very well at times. The graphics and effects are good but not great. The characters and storyline carry the movie. Religious folk may not like the biblical references and symbolism. The end of the movie is very well done. Anyone that likes movies in the comic genre will love this one.This is a very dark movie in the comic book character series. For small kids it may be too dark, violent, and scary.
