I've been a John Denver fan all my life ... I've played his music on my guitar since I was a teenager. I first heard this collection on a CASSETTE TAPE of my mum & dad's and I'm so glad it was available on CD. This contains some of his best music and it's the ONLY CD of JD that has "Boy from the Country" recorded on it. This is my 7th JD CD.

I grew up with John Denver, bought all his albums in the '70s, and couldn't get enough of him. I also attended his concert in San Diego in 1977, and it was by far the best concert I've attended in my entire life. Though his first 'Greatest Hits' album is one of his all time best, this album is by far his best of all - you can't get better than this. Each song is the best recording of that song, EVER. Lee Holdridge's outstanding orchestration really shines through on this album in particular, showcasing John's songs in a way that makes them even MORE beautiful, if that's possible. Listen to the gorgeous horns at the end of 'Rhymes and Reasons' right after John sings, "come and stand beside us, we can find a better way". Listen to the way the violins can make you literally see and feel the eagle soaring in 'The Eagle and The Hawk', the song that John has said he identifies with the most. John's humility, love, sensitivity and spirit come shining through in this album, in his remarks, and his music. You can just hear and feel the love and joy he felt for us, the animals, and the earth. I dare you to listen to this without falling in love with him and everything he stood for all over again. I can't stop listening to it, but it also makes me miss him terribly. John always had the ability to make me feel better when I was down, and just to make me happy in general. No John Denver collection would be complete without this album. It's quintessential John Denver at the height of his career, when he sold more albums than ANYONE ELSE that year (yes, ANYONE else!). His voice is at its strongest and most gorgeous, and really shines from beginning to end. Pay particular attention to the purity of it on 'Boy From the Country', and the power he can put behind those high notes on 'The Eagle and The Hawk'. The only thing that could possibly make this album any better would be adding 'Calypso', but that's only because it hadn't been written yet. You can't go wrong with this album - it's pure John Denver Heaven, capturing the complete essence of everything that was John Denver, and everything he stood for. It's incredibly sad and unfortunate that he was taken so soon, and we will never have another John Denver again.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I first encountered this recording in the 1970's, when it was first released on 33 1/3 RPM Disk. Several of my friends and I enjoyed it so much, that we went to work the next morning humming the tunes, and some of us, even remembering lyrics. It is a CLASSIC. It gives a wonderful look into the life of this remarkable musician. We sense his musicality and his innate sense of humor for the simple, yet very important, aspects of life that are now, sadly, lacking in our times. Just "Grandma's Featherbed, Forrest Lawn, Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio, are just a few of the songs that take a good, and humorous look at our lives back then. From these glimpses into our past, we can now find humour, understanding, and a good look at what might seem foolish to others, yet precious to us. I would recommend this album to everyone. The age should make no difference, as it still appeals to today. Just as we appreciate Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Copeland, Dvorak, and many other great composers, who used music to speak of their times, John Denver did this in a "homey" manner that is still appealing, and still can give a us a good laugh. May more recordings of this nature be remastered to the CD format in order that a new generation may learn to appreciate heritage, good music, and good, clean FUN!!Vollständige Rezension lesen
I used to have this album as a kid, but lost it many, many years ago. I finally went ahead and purchased this CD once again. Wow, what a trip! Each cut is superb and John is definently at his best. John's personality really comes through during this concert that was recorded over a 7 day stand at the Universal Ampitheater in California. The band and orchestration is absolutely great and top notch. I think of the several musicians that were lucky enough to play for John, this band is the best! If you like live CD's, and if you like John Denver, or even if you don't, get this CD! You won't be sorry.
I remember at the age of 11-12 singing to this 8-Track in my parents living room, as if we were John putting on the concert, and now I have the CD's to relive that old memory!!
