Great GPS for a great price
Navigon stopped selling and supporting all GPS units in the United States. They decided to go with an iPhone only app. I have enough going on with my iPhone, so I wanted a GPS unit that was small and easy to use and included traffic. For the price the Navigon 5100 GPS with 4.3" widescreen display that includes Free lifetime traffic was a perfect fit. The impressive thing to me was how well the traffic works. I drive highway miles (in the Chicagoland area) and it has told me of backups and accidents before I start my route. I can choose to avoid them and re-route or not. The maps were also very current. I have owned a TomTom and Garmin. Keeping the maps updated was no fun and it took way to long to get the current maps. This unit had all the current maps loaded which was a nice ... Navigon stopped selling and supporting all GPS units in the United States. A Pretty Good GPS
I like this GPS. At first I was having trouble using the touchscreen, but then I just calibrated and it worked great. The unit is compact but has large enough buttons to make the touch screen usuable. The navigation is pretty much what you are going to get with any system. When you come up to an exit on an interstate, a picture will appear that show what lane you need to be in in order to make the exit (lane assist). I thought that was pretty usefull. You will also see other things on the map as you drive such as restaurants, parking, gas stations, parks, that are known as points of interest. You then have the option of selecting one of these and adding it to your preexisting navigation. Takes a little while to turn on (keep the button held in, it will eventually turn on). User ... Good GPS for the $
I bought this particular GPS because of the price. I only need one occasionally, I didn't want to spend a lot for a unit I use once a month and it had the features I wanted, mostly text to voice and touch screen, plus it has traffic reports, all for about $100. The good is the maps seem accurate, it doesn't take that long to acquire the satellites and calculates routes quickly. The bad is it is not the easiest to input addresses, and for me the text is too small but I need glasses for reading but not driving. Bottom line I am happy with it for the price but my next GPS will have a bigger screen. At $100 you have to make sacrifices on what you get and this one had the least of those I looked at and I looked at all the less expensive models.I bought this particular GPS because of the price. Navigon 5100 GPS, a poor choice
First, I must say that I needed to return the item, twice, and moved on to another manufacturer. The Navigon 5100 max was exclusively distributed by Radio Shack, and at first glance appeared to have all of the attributes of a unit costing several hundred dollars more. Radio Shack has discontinued this item. I now understand why. The display was excellent and the 3D view was better than both the Magellan and Garmin. The lane assist was also excellent and mirrored the Garmin 1490T. Routing was also very good with clear voice instructions. Traffic assist was there, but I found it to be inconsistant. (Interestingly, the Advertising that pops up on the screen on both the Magellan 1475T and the Garmin 1490T was absent on the Navigon.) Working with the viewing and detour options while ... Working with the viewing and detour options while driving was difficult. Now for the BAD. The Navigon web site is poorly constructed and receiving updates and logging on was impossible. There is NO customer support. Once I finally was able to register the second unit, I lost well over 24 hours of computer time trying to download and update the unit over several days. The Day/night display auto change over feature, which is extremely important on long rides from day to night, DID NOT WORK AT ALL. I had to wait until I could stop to manually change the screen over. (The brightness of the day time display is very distracting while driving at night.) This feature did not work on either unit, so I have to believe that it was a programing flaw and not just one unit. The BLUE TOOTH feature did not work, period. I tryed everything. It would sinc for about 5 seconds, and then loose it. I tried it on three different makes of cell phone, to see if it was a problem with the phone. But no, it is the units. Also, I understand that if it did work, you needed to resinc and program each time you got back in the car. So in conclusion, I am now using the Magellan 1475T. I compared this unit side by side for a week against the Garmin 1490T. The Garmin was $120 more than the Magellan and had Blue Tooth that worked excellently, but the real test was routing. On known routes I regularly travel, the Magellan agreed with my normal routing and quickly adjusted when I disagreed with it, where as the Garmin took a long time to reroute and also tried to send me on some really out of the way routes through intercity (dangerous) streets instead of direct highway routes. It also changed its routing right before a turn.(I traveled this route three times, and it did the same thing each time.) At one point, in the middle of a traffic jam, the Garmin simply rebooted itself for no reason leaving me high and dry when I needed to make a rerouting choice. The Magellan also gives you three rerouting options with how much time you will save by detouring around a traffic problem. I also found the brightness of the Garmin, while extremely easy to see with a very large font, distracting at night as compared to the softer view in the Magellan. As to volume, the Garmin was much louder, however, you cannot adjust the volume from the navigation screen and insists that you come to a complete stop before "reprograming". On the Magellan, the volume display and adjustment is on the navigation screen in clear view. Overall, I spent less than $80 on the Navigon, $150 on the Magellan and $270 on the Garmin on sale. Price, as you can see is not the only deciding factor.

This GPS has mostly standard features, with a few marginally useful extras such as "reality view", and one big benefit: lifetime free traffic reports. I live in southern California where this can really come in handy. I have not had many gps to compare it to, but the downsides to me seems to be the slightly too quiet voice even on full volume, and slow response when typing in addresses. Overall, it does its job, and has traffic info so it's good.This GPS has mostly standard features, with a few marginally useful extras such as "reality view", and one big benefit: lifetime free traffic reports.
