In Russ Meyer's BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, all-girl rock band the Kelly Affair moves to Los Angeles in pursuit of fame and fortune. Upon meeting wealthy rock scenester Ronnie "Z-Man" Barzell (John Lazar) at one of his lavish parties, they believe they've met the man who can bring them fame. Changing their name to the Carrie Nations, they navigate their way through a maze of sexual misadventures, drugs, and brushes with some very unpleasant characters only to find that fame comes at a price. Livening up the considerably frantic proceedings are Meyer starlets Edy Williams and Erica Gavin (VIXEN), as well as an appearance by the Strawberry Alarm Clock. Finally invited to work within a major studio (20th Century Fox) following the enormous success of 1968's VIXEN, Meyer, along with screenwriter Roger Ebert, created the ultimate sex, drugs, and rock & roll film of the psychedelic era. An altogether odd mixture of comedy, drama, and left-field shocks punctuated with memorably wacky lines, BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS lets Meyer's reliably decadent formula mingle agreeably with the psychedelia of the time.

Buy For the Film But Not the Extras
As for the movie itself, there's not much I can say that hasn't already been said. This is one of my favorite films of all time. People call Russ Meyer a schlock artist and/or a pervert, and talk about his movies being "so bad they're good," but that's all a crock. He was a gifted film-maker who edited film in way that no one ever had before, who told a story in a way no one ever had before, who was a master at pacing, characters . . . And this is one of his masterpieces. As for the extras, I was somewhat disappointed. Hearing the actors argue and reminisce over the film was enjoyable for a while, but got old quickly. Roger Ebert's commentary was too dry to follow. The screen tests footage was fun, but not all that great. My feeling is that if you're buying this for the extras, ... Beyond the Drugs and Hysteria !
I bought this DVD because I wanted to see the Strawberry Alarm Clock perform hopefully live ~ it did not happen, they lip synched, in fact they are hard to even see in this film due to the trippy nature of the film director. but this direction actually works very well with the film. I did like the High Quality Technocolor look and feel to the film that you might remember from the 1960's Batman Tv series. It has that bright and sharp look to it which really makes this film great ! I will recommend it to anyone wanting to seek out what the 1960's flipped out and wasted times was about, this film really has it all. Super Movie
So glad to find The Valley of the Dolls on dvd. It is a very good movie. I remember seeing it when I was a teenager. Performances were great.

Great movie!
Wow! That's about all I can say about this movie. Once you watch it, you'll never forget it. Oh, and Erica Gavin might be the sexiest woman ever.
