A Fun Flick But With Some Strings Attached
Well, now that I've gotten the bad pun out of the way, what do I think of this movie? Not bad really, not bad at all. It has a lot of things going for it, & it's certainly not a bottom of the barrel cheapie like the same producer's "Decadent Evil". While it contradicts several of the past "Puppet Master" movies, it is a good origin story tied in with the whole "secrets of life" aspect stolen from the evil Egyptian god 'Sutec' (that's the spelling they use...). And the new/old puppets are very well-designed, especially the skull-faced & surgical scrubs-clad 'Dr. Death' who is cool enough to have his own solo feature, & I also like how 'Retro-Tunneler' is here called 'Drill Sergeant' which I frankly think is a much better name than the one he has been stuck with all these years. However, the strings are visible far too often, & the film really misses the brief bits of stop motion animation that used to be done for them by the late, great Dave Allen (as the filmmakers freely admit during the usual VideoZone "making of" documentary). And speaking of wooden performances, while they are certainly attractive enough, when it comes to some of the younger supporting actors, well, I haven't seen acting this bad since I used to get dragged to high school plays! Oh, the older character actors on view are fine (I especially like the trio of mummies Sutec brings to life & sends out disguised in contemporary clothes & dark glasses to take vengeance on those who stole from him), & the two leads are certainly up to the task, especially the lovely young Brigetta Dau playing Elsa who brings a bright likable charm to her period part. Greg Sestero as the young Andre Toulon takes a little while to get used to because he looks like a theatrically flamboyant-clad cross between Siegfried & Roy & the kid from "Smallville" & affects a heavy French accent not used by the elder Toulon in the film's framing sequences (the always wonderful Guy Rolfe in his last performance), but he comes across well as a soft-spoken but determined romantic hero, & I must admit that I got a kick out of the fact that the play he has his puppets put on before they come to life is as pretentious as you would expect for something being produced by a young artistic intellectual in 1902 Paris. As for the technical side, well, the main problem I had (& it might have only been with my disc) was with the soundtrack. The musical track was fine, a clear & beautifully orchestrated piece (although NOT Richard Band's wonderfully atmospheric 'melancholy merry-go-round music' that is the signature theme of the series), but it tended to overpower the other sound, especially the dialogue which was hard to hear in some places. I also had an intermittent pixel problem, but as I said, that just might have been on my disc. These things aside, I found it an enjoyable picture, & if you go into it with these things in mind, I think that you might enjoy too.

Very nice Puppet Master Prequel !
Good retrospective story that finally tells the story of how Andre Toulon became puppet master in the Nazi German Era. The love story of his beloved Elsa is also unveiled. Great movie, with cool special effects. Puppets are not as cool as the first movie, but this is why is RETRO PUPPETS!

Great flashback for the Puppet Master series!
This is a must have for all Puppet Master fans! The background of how Toulan's puppets were brought to life is fascinating. From this entry in the Puppet Master series, we also learn how Andre Toulan met his beloved Ilsa. Great backstory to a favorite film series.

Puppets vs. Nazis!!!
The puppets return to fight the good fight against the Nazis yet again. I love part 3 where they first battle Nazis. This one is not as good as part 3 but the puppets still have their same charm and we get to see what young Toulin was like. This is another great B-horror movie from Full Moon and I would recommend watching at least once. 3.5/5

Just what it states it's retro & the puppet masters
Another movie in the puppet master series. I can't say anything bad about these movies the series get's better and better - only one of the films i didn't really like - but hey one out of nine isn't bad - but this puts some of the other movies into prospective fills in the plots - u'll love this movie
