Product Information

This groundbreaking crime drama from super-producer Stephen Bochco aired from 1981 to 1986, and followed one of the first ensemble casts on TV. Set in a fictional town based on Chicago, the action centered on a chaotic police precinct and provided a very realistic view of the private and work lives of characters who occupied every rung of the hierarchical ladder. The first season starts the action with a bang and doesn't let up, as Precinct Captain Furillo (Daniel J. Travanti) has to defuse a hostage crisis. The rest of the season keeps up the pace, as Officer Larue (Kiel Martin) battles a drinking problem, Sgt. Esterhaus (Michael Conrad) questions his upcoming marriage, and Furillo finds his chances for promotion compromised by a city councilman's involvement in a murder.

  • hill street blues

I loved this show when it premiered and watched it eagerly every week. I was in the Air Force then and remember this show being one of the absolute best on television. To those who are quick to forget, Hill Street Blues set the precedent for cop shows to come. By killing off key characters occasionally the show had a sense of stark, gritty realism that made most of the cop shows of it's time seem like 'Car 54'. This show was in the forefront of bold, daring originality. True, when Michael Conrad died there WAS a decline in the show because he was such a well-loved character, but the show retained it's greatness nonetheless. In MY book Hill Street will always be remembered as the show that all other cop shows, and even non-cop shows, tip their hats to.

  • Not What I remembered

When this show was on, I thought it was the best show EVER on TV. I thought so for years. It was the predecessor to all of the shows like NYPD Blue, Law and Order, ER and the like. It was original and uncharted territory. I eagerly awaited each weeks episodes. I laughed, I cried, and I was sometimes left with my jaw hanging. I was left with memories of this show being the best ever written. When it came out on DVD, I pre-ordered it and couldn't wait to get it. When it came, we watched an episode a night. I was slightly disappointed because compared to today's programming, it was mild and amatuer... I enjoyed it anyways, but sometimes wish I would have left it to my memory.

  • Gotta Love Hill STreet

Hill Street Blues had an eleven member cast and a large number of extras who returned on a regular basis. It was innovative in that it didn't tell how the police solved one case. Instead, it showed one day in the life of an intercity police station. There were no big crimes solved just the day to day chaos of patrolmen/women trying to get through the day. There was always a combination of comedy and drama. The acting was excellent, the pace was quick, and the direction tight. It was an excellent show that deserved more than seven seasons. After twenty years it is fun to watch again and to share with our teenaged sons. If you start watching it you are guaranteed to pick your favorite cops and wish them the best as you ride with them to calls - never knowing what they will find once ...

  • VIVA LA HILL STREET!

80's-era television doesn't get better than this. I discovered this show during it's second season and I've been hooked ever since. I do admit that I wasn't as much of a fan after the death of Michael Conrad(Sgt. Phil Esterhaus), but the release of the DVD's may make me change my views. I'll never forget the time in which Hill Street Blues dominated an entire category at the Emmy awards. To my knowledge, that hasn't been done before or since. So the only thing left to ask is...when is season three coming out?

  • Season 1 Hill Street

It is so neat to review the past shows and think of the times when this was a big hit. I am now retired from a police department and I always said that Hill Street was the so close to the real thing. From Grumpy police officers to crazy situations; this was so real. My ex wife became Mrs. Furillo calling me at all the wrong times to complain about things that could be settled away from the department. Look at all the spin off careers this started for many of the stars. It is so neat to see them together again. I see Howard waiting with the SWAT team to end a situation and Belker growling at someone. I hope the other seasons become avalailable. I have Season 2 as well. (I no longer have to answer to my Mrs Furillo, the kids are grown up.)
