Great digital voice recorder for business and home use
I bought the DS-2800 to replace an analogue voice recorder.It has a much better sound quality and is not so badly affected when dictating outside in windy weather. The transcription kit is required to make the best use of the recorder, which is easy to use and set up on any PC or Mac. Care needs to be taken when you first use the recorder to ensure you record in the right file as there are 5 main sections (A-E) and it is easy to jump into another file and wonder where your recording has gone. A huge improvement over the analogue machines is that it is virtually impossible to accidentally erase files. Battery life is good and the machine has a huge memory, so you dont need to wipe things off to make room for the next recording. No more RSI from taking notes in long meetings!
I bought the DS2 because I needed to record meetings clearly such that they can be easily transcribed. It seems that transcribers prefer the DSS format. The DS2 does what it says on the tin i.e. it records audio well in LP and SP mode. I haven't tried the higher quality modes so don't know what the quality is like. The menu is easy to use, and the buttons are fairy intuitive. Adding comments to the tracks you record is essential if you want to ever remember which is which, and takes a bit of getting used to. It comes with a cradle which is a useful way to prop it up for recording. Not a lot of point as a docking cradle for me though, as I don't leave anything plugged into a USB port; I don't have enough spare ones. If you use the recorder for meetings, I recommend that you don't set the option for VCVA (Variable Control Voice Activation). It misses faint voices even at the highest setting! It eats batteries! With a lot of stop start recording and playback, it got nowhere near the 18hours or so it's supposed to. Even with new Duracell batteries. I'm trying out rechargeable batteries and/or keeping it plugged into a USB port, which hopefully will make it cheaper to run. The DSS software looks good for playback, although I would like an option to convert the DSS recordings to a format iTunes will recognise. All in all, a good little device.

Olympus DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder
I have recorder quite a bit with it, lots of voice tracks and even on music from my keyboards I find it very true to sound. I also have a DS-40 top of the range Olympus recorder and the quality of the DS-2 is just as good. if I had a grumble its the size of memory, in this day and age when memory is so cheep why oh why do companies like Olympus take a cheepskate view by putting such a small amount of memory in. good for taking notes good for almost anything, so long as its over in about 1hourI have recorder quite a bit with it, lots of voice tracks and even on music from my keyboards I find it very true to sound. Superb and easy to use
The voice recorder is small but with easily manipulated controls. It records sound really clearly. In my mind it has all the features you need for a business or study voice recorder, Good sound quality, good battery life and so very easy and quick to use. Totally recommended.

One thing lets this recorder down..The built in stereo microphones.Use a good external one the difference is amazing.I knew this weakness but have plenty of external mikes.The only other slight weakness is the docking plug is tiny and a bit fiddly.Good point is the ability to control recording say at night when it's dark,record and stop easy to feel your way.
