After reading a feature article in Parade magazine about Senator James Webb of Virginia, I purchased his book with the idea of reading it on vacation. When the book arrived I was excited to learn it was written about events in a specific place in Vietnam . . . The An Hoa Basin. I served in this area and am very familiar with the all of the places, “The Arizona Valley,” “Liberty Bridge,” “Dodge City.” Collectively, this is where the enemy lived and was hard-core duty for the grunts. In my opinion this book is an American masterpiece on par with Hemmingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls, or A Farewell to Arms. It is the story of a typical Marine Corps platoon living in the primitive and constantly dangerous conditions of war. The characters come and go as casualties . . . Baby Cakes, Cat ... It brings new meaning to the relevance of diversity. This book is for anyone planning to join the Marines. If you know someone planning to enlist . . . give them this book. It should be required reading for all newly commissioned officers. This is about the absurdity of war and the primitive nature of the human condition. It is intense and gut wrenching, it will make you laugh out loud, choke up with tears and has a very powerful message. A must read for any one who wants to know how it feels.
Gripping and fast paced, a must read for war buffs. The vietnam war told at the gut level. If you cant relate to this then you dont have a soul.
