Three days ago I listened to the opening bars of this album and I got shivers up my back and a lump in my throat. I've listened to the whole thing (2 cds) on my ipod several times since and it still gets me the same way. I was a fan of Chris Rea back in the late 80's and liked his albums (especially "On The Beach" and "Watersign"), but this is the style he was born for. The depth of emotion in the lyrics and his mastery of the guitar are astonishing, not to mention his amazing voice - blues at its best. I bought this album after reading an article recently which described his serious illness in 2000 and long recovery. It was at this time he decided to write the blues album he always wanted to. Being a lover of blues music and realising Rea's voice would be perfect for the genre I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed. His illness and feelings of mortality are obviously reflected in the lyrics, but it's not all doom and gloom. There are many moments of beauty and joy in stories about relationships, journeys, regeneration and love. Cd1 is in the darker style-the opening track "Easy Rider" as I've already said gives me a shiver. The rest of the first cd continues in a slow blues style dealing with themes of transition and changing destiny. Cd2 is more upbeat with a bit of gospel influence creeping in. It feels more positive with tracks like "Sun Is Rising" and "Someday My Peace Will Come" before finishing with a truly heartwarming love song "Give That Girl A Diamond." A brilliant album and thankfully not the last from a great blues artist. There are at least two more he's recorded since that I've yet to hear - soon to be added to my collection!Vollständige Rezension lesen
The lyrics of these songs really do take you down a very long painful and stony road, giving the listener a just a small taste of the suffering chris endured, the anguish and despair as he neared death at times then the joyful journey back up that road as chris slowly recovered and welcomed and embraced anew the joy of being alive and a live free from pain.
great
