A Child's Christmas in Wales
I watched this with my girls, when they were young. We were captivated, it was absolutely magical. It is the story of a long ago Christmas, seen through the eyes of a young Welch boy. I haven't seen this movie since it was on TV, at least thirty years ago. I keep a collection of our family's favorite Christmas movies like Elf, A Christmas Story and such. This year, when the grandchildren and children arrive, I will have a surprise new film for them. We will wait until then to watch it, so that we can all share the magic together.I watched this with my girls, when they were young. We were captivated, it was absolutely magical. A Child's Christmas in Wales (DVD, 2005)
I decided to buy this DVD because I gave my copy of it to my grandchildren. Dylan Thomas, the great Welsh poet, died in 1953, so he wrote A Child's Christmas in Wales sometime in the 1940's. This movie rendition of it is absolutely perfect. It is not easy to make a movie of a poem. The acting is so well done that it feels as if it's natural...just a Grandpa telling his grandson what it was like at Christmas when he was a child. The scenes go back and forth between present day and when Grandpa was a boy, with his grandson interjecting questions and the boy's parents doing what parents do on Christmas Eve. Denholm Elliott stars as the Grandpa and speaks the poem into reality. He and the child who plays his grandson are a team. The movie makes this poem absolutely accessible to everyone. It ... This is the Christmas video par excellence. Based around Dylan Thomas's narrative prose/poem written in the 1950s about his childhood memories of Christmas in a Welsh town in the early 1900s, this is just flawlessly and beautifully done. I think Thomas might even have liked it and he was a bit cranky at least when sober. We've watched a bootlegged VHS copy from cable for over ten years every year on Christmas day. Now that the DVD is out it will be a whole new(non- grainy)experience. Definitely for all Anglo-(Welsho-)philes and those who get sentimental at Christmastime and who can appreciate and sit still to enjoy something of the highest quality.This is the Christmas video par excellence. Enchantingly entertaining!
Delightful movie. The movie brings the book to life. Every actor and actress is perfect for their role, the imagery cozy, and it’s downright funny! The only reason I said it wasn’t good value is because I paid in the low 20’s for this video, and I know it’s just because it’s not easily obtainable. It’s a short but very sweet movie and even with a little grumbling about the price I’d buy the movie again.Delightful movie. The movie brings the book to life. This 1987 film of A Child’s Christmas in Wales follows Dylan Thomas’s poem closely. It’s a Christmas treasure! I wish it would be re-issued as it would be a perfect gift.
