Reviews
This stunning collection of some of the best spiritual writers of all time comes from Plough, the exceptionally thoughtful, high-quality publishing house founded by a simple-living community. What a delight to have seasonal readings from theological voices like Jürgen Moltmann, mystics like Bernard of Clairvaux, poets -- from Sylvia Plath to T.S. Eliot to Jane Kenyon -- contemplatives such as Henri Nouwen, and storytelling writers like the late Brennan Manning., It's hard to go wrong with 40 essays and poems from theological writers such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dorothy Day, Madeleine L'Engle, Martin Luther, Kathleen Norris, Henri Nouwen, Philip Yancey, Karl Barth and Sren Kierkegaard. These are not frivolous, feel-good Advent readings; they are deep, sometimes jarring reflections, many with a strong orientation toward social justice... Synopsis
This collection, born of obvious passion and graced with superb writing, is a welcome even necessary addition to the glutted holiday bookshelves. -- Publishers Weekly (starred review) Though Christians the world over make yearly preparations for Lent, there's a conspicuous lack of good books for that other great spiritual season: Advent. All the same, this four-week period leading up to Christmas is making a comeback as growing numbers reject shopping-mall frenzy and examine the deeper meaning of the season. Ecumenical in scope, these fifty devotions invite the reader to contemplate the great themes of Christmas and the significance that the coming of Jesus has for each of us - not only during Advent, but every day. Whether dipped into at leisure or used on a daily basis, Watch for the Light gives the phrase "holiday preparations" new depth and meaning. Includes contributions by these and other writers: C. S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle, Thomas Merton, and Philip Yancey Dorothy Day, Henri Nouwen, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Oscar Romero, and Edith Stein Martin Luther, Meister Eckhart, Eberhard Arnold, and Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt T. S. Eliot, John Donne, and Sylvia Plath Karl Barth, Will Willimon, Jürgen Moltmann, and J. B. Phillips Kathleen Norris, Brennan Manning, and Evelyn Underhill Annie Dillard, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Gerard Manley Hopkins Romano Guardini, St. John Chrysostom, and Giovanni Papini Jane Kenyon, Friedrich Wilhelm Foerster, Isaac Penington, and Alfred Delp, There's plenty out there on the 'real' meaning of Christmas; this volume steps back further to examine more vital questions: What does it mean that God took on human form? That Mary believed? That Christ came down to earth, and will one day come again? Whether dipped into at leisure or used for formal daily devotions, this unparalleled collection gives the phrase 'Christmas preparations' new depth and meaning. Includes writing from Kathleen Norris, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Annie Dillard, John Donne, Meister Eckhart, Dorothy Day, T. S. Eliot, Gustavo Gutierrez, Eberhard Arnold, G. M. Hopkins, C. S. Lewis, Thomas Merton, Martin Luther, Henri Nouwen, Edith Stein, Thomas Aquinas, Dorotee Soelle, Philip Yancey, and others., Though Christians the world over make yearly preparations for Lent, there's a conspicuous lack of good books for that other great spiritual season: Advent. The item was exactly as described and very carefully packaged! It also arrived pretty quickly. Shipping is pricey these days, but that's not the Seller's fault. The shipping fee was fair considering the careful packaging (and I have a service that reimburses me up to $10, so in this case, it's perfect!). This mug was replacing my favorite mug from years ago,...I'm so glad I found it.Thank you! It was a very easy and friendly shopping experience!

This is the cutest little baby ornament. I bought it because I thought it would be perfect for the new baby coming into our family closer to Christmas. If I can manage to give it away. It is so cute, I might have to keep it. Well packaged and shipped quickly. Thank you for an easy and pleasant transaction. Recommend this seller for quality of item, a very accurate description and reasonable pricing.

  • Watch for the Light

Wonderful book to read during Advent. It was a much-needed retreat and perspective adjustment for me from the onslaught of an American consumer-driven Christmas and the frantic pace that is present even within the Christian community. I appreciated the writings that spanned the centuries, from authors outside our own cultural context, as well as more current authors. But always there was depth and refreshment - not warm and fuzzy platitudes, but truly thought-provoking words that prodded me to examine my heart and seek to hear God's voice. I will be reaching for this book again as soon as Thanksgiving is over next year! And I may be exploring some of these authors in the meantime.

  • excellent

A wonderful choice of authors and readings for the Advent Season. There is a great mix of styles and content. Something for everyone to chew on leading up to Christmas. And certainly could be read year after year, as many readings are profound.
