Over 130,000 Australian horses served in the 1914-1918 war. None came home. This is their story. When the first convoys of the ANZAC Expeditionary Forces sailed from Albany's majestic King George Sound in November and December 1914, they carried with them hundreds of horses. Many had been loaded in ports elsewhere in Australia and New Zealand. Some came from unexpected places, including Juna Downs, a vast pastoral station in Western Australia's remote Pilbara region. Over 130,000 Australian horses were to serve our forces, around 70,000 were to die overseas in the line of duty, and only one was to return home. What was the fate of up to 50,000 Australian horses that were still alive when guns became silent in 1918? This is the extraordinary story of Australia's war horses - where they came from, where they served and what became of those that had survived when Great War hostilities ceased in 1918.

    WALER the Australian great war horse

    This DVD was an excellent documentary on the Waler - the very strong horses that were taken to the Middle East for the 2nd Light Horse Regiment. I found most interesting the story of "Bill the Bastard". This great horse Bill and Major Shanahan rode through the battlefield picking up four (4) soldiers who had lost their horses in the charge of Beersheba - amazingly carrying 3 men on his back and 2 in the stirrups . ... Bill was one of more than 130,000 horses who served in World War I and never returned to Australia.

    THE WALER - an EXCELLENT AUSTRALIAN WW1 DOCUMENTARY.

    Beautifully portrayed from beginning to end! Having had my Grandfather in the Australian Light Horse Regiment from embarkment HMAT Karoo February 1915, Gallipoli, then returning to Egpyt travelling hundreds of kms through the harsh challenges of the Desert with their courageous, loyal horses till late 1918, this DVD The Waler could not help but bring more than a few tears. A most Wonderful Documentary my family and I all appreciate!
