For those of you who have not seen this film version of the Bard's work, be forewarned that they have taken horrific liberties with the text. The essential material has been hacked to pieces and the bulk of the acting is likewise horrific. It is wonderful to see Olivia DeHavilland in her first screen performance, but it is quite irritating to have Mickey Rooney with his wining high pitched laugh as Puck. James Cagney does an interesting job transferring his mobster persona into a Shakespearean character, with only remnants breaking forth, unfortunately at key moments, but still I feel he was an odd choice for the character. Overall there is a plethora of recognizable Hollywood figures and that is enjoyable to see, even if their performances are not really that good. There are a number of irrelevant cutaways which only further detract from the piece. Max Reinhardt's vision for this show was disturbingly opulent in a way that did great injury to the Bard's careful compositions of text, most of which you will never experience in this version of the play. Some of the special effects are phenomenal in themselves, especially for the period, but they are overbearing in the context of the piece and distracting from the beauty of the story. If there were ever uglier and more creepy gnomes I don't know where. Over all this is a hodgepodge of special effect, rather odd interpretive fantasia, and the overblown extravagance of Hollywood. The extras on the disc are quite valuable as a glimpse into Hollywood in the early days. It's worth having as a piece of history, but not as an accurate or even artistic expression of the play or the intent of Shakespeare himself. This is a great old black and white movie filmed when Mickey Roonie was a young boy and he is only a supporting actor. The quality of what I received is excellent.

beautiful story considering the gay 90s (1890) and the spiritual influence of that era ,and the special effects are wonderful..

James Cagney as Bottom is great, and it's wonderful to see him in this part & reciting Shakespeare's lines so well, but the icing on the cake for me is Mickey Rooney as Puck. He is astounding and sets the standard for which any other actor playing this famous part might strive to attain. He is absolute perfection! And of course the plot is wonderful as anyone who is familiar with this Shakespeare comedy well knows.
