It is the 25th century and Humans are now exploring space and discovering they are not alone. In Sword of the Stars, players will colonize space as one of four races: Humans, Hivers, Tarkas, and Liir, each with their own language, ships, and technologies to guide them through the adventure. For example, the Hivers travel the galaxy through Teleport Gates, and Liir use light drives for their own space journeys. <br><br>The four have a basic technology tree to follow, and options to research over 150 upgrades. However, the tree will change slightly each time a new game is started, so there will be no exploitation of a favorite skill. The game can be played alone, or with up to eight friends through the Internet or a LAN. Players will begin a custom game by organizing a variety of options including the number of stars present in the galaxy, number of players, beginning resources and technology, and the amount of time given for strategic and tactical gameplay. Scenarios such as "Hungry Children," where players hold off an invasion of Hivers, and "Holy Lands," a situation where gamers will attempt to capture and hold five holy planets for five turns, are included with the initial release of the game. <br><br>Ships are fully customizable, and players can research and create their own ships using the included designer. Three ship types, destroyer, cruiser, and dreadnaught, are the basis for all ship designs. Players can mix and match command, mission, and engine sections, then add armor and a few of over 40 weapon choices.

A new style of 4x game
Sword of the stars is an attempt to reinvigorate the 4x (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) space strategy genre, which, even with admittedly good-within-the-genre games such as Galactic Civilizations II, has suffered from a lack of innovation and a tendency toward tedious micromanagement. Sword of the Stars (SOTS)does a rather good job of it overall. The game has been developed and published on a shoestring budget, and this shows in the graphics (though not bad, they are a bit crude for 2006) and somewhat clunky 2d art, but the gameplay has many innovations that, for me, makes this game a sure winner. The planet management is very simple - a planet can either build ships or produce cash (needed to start building anything and to speed research), or, if it is a colony, spend resources ... The planet management is very simple - a planet can either build ships or produce cash (needed to start building anything and to speed research), or, if it is a colony, spend resources on terraforming and infastructure. In my view, this adds to the experience of the game - even a 100-planet empire is quite manageable. Research is handled empire-wide through a simple but well-laid out menu, and the tech tree will change somewhat depending on what species you play and chance, making the research in each game somewhat unique. The strategic screen is a simple but easily accessed 3d galaxy, with one star equalling one planet. The strategic game is turn-based. The ship design screen is easy enough not to get tedious and detailed enough to give much variety. The different weapons, devices, armour and shields each ship or defense platform can be given really make a difference in combat, forcing you to adapt your tactics to your reseach priorities. Real-time fleet combat is great fun and engaging, although the ships move a bit slowly even under the better power plant types, which make weapons selection, layout and targeting a bit less important than manouvre - this becomes less true in MP games, however. The combat is 2d in a 3d environment, which works well, but one cannot help but wonder if the experienced Homeworld programmers which worked on SOTS shouldn't have gone all the way on the tactical mode. There is not ground combat in SOTS - genocide and subsequent colonization is the only way to turn an enemy planet into yours. Overall, tac combat is fun and fast, fitting the game well. The great thing about SOTS, though, is that it has achieved what, for example, the Total War designers have refused to think about despite fan demands: players can play a strategic and tactical MP campaign. While the real, five-player, 250+ ship battles can take a while, this has been solved by imposing a turn time limit of each battle - set by the players themselves. Overall, MP strategy works brilliantly. The four different species are also a great innovations. Instead of simply making the species different numbers and bonuses, they are truly unique, each possessing a different kind of FTL drive (which effects both strategic and tactical gameplay) and different ship layouts, plus a host of more minor differences. This makes the job of leading the slowly expanding but heavily armed Hiver insectoids to victory a very different thing than leading the fragile - but creative cetacean Liir, the straightforward repitilian Tarkas, or the swift-yet limited humans with their convoluted Node paths. SOTS is an excellent game that, to an extent, reinvigorates the 4x genre and recommended for both experienced and amateur players. While its strategic game is very simple, this is a small price to pay for the MP strategy and engaging tactical gameplay.

Shoestring budgets hamper an excellent game.
The 4x genre hasn't had a sure winner since Acendancy. Though Galactic Civ was okay, Orion was too Civ 2. However with the invention of multiplayer, the 4x genre has born new wings! Yet release of this game should have waited 6 months. As patch 1.2.1 came out a host of bugs in scripts, AI, interface, alliance options and many other minor things that should have been fixed LONG before release. This is an awsome game, and none in the Galactic scale RTS/4x Genre match it. But I find myself praying for the next patch (still promised) that will solve the existing host of crash errors, net play bugs, and AI research issues. Buy it for 10-20 bucks at a steal, enjoy the best the genre has to offer, wait for the patches... :(The 4x genre hasn't had a sure winner since Acendancy. Awesome game.
This is by far the best 4x strategy game I have ever played. It minimizes all the micromanagement and makes battles real-time and incredibly fun.
