I wanted a basic sat nav which will navigate me in the UK and europe. Its mostly for leisure use, though I have used it in my van to find customers houses etc ( I run my own construction company).I am not passionate about sat navs, having spent many years watching imbeciles take stupid directions off an obvious route just because a GPS tells them to ! But having had problems with finding specific locations eg hotels in cities, and just a general feeling it was time to try one, I decided to buy one. I settled on the zumo 550 because its very reasonable price new, has full mapping , plus enough features to do what I need.A friend who also travels with me has the same unit , so it was easy to share routes too. The unit was quite easy to fit to my bike, and I was soon up and away using it.My biggest headache was getting used to mapsource( the PC program for creating routes), after years of using google earth , which is easier to use.But after some perseverance I did master how to make your own routes up, and how to share with another user. Practically, I am very impressed with this unit , and despite my sceptisism of sat navs in general, have been quite pleasantly surprised at how useful and accurate it was on a 3000 mile trip across europe. There were a few errors and twice the unit froze up whilst in Germany ...which was a real pain as it was just at the point I needed it to get me out of Saarbrucken ! But it did unfreeze itself , and worked almost faultlessly for the trip. I did come to really be impressed by its ability to recalculate the route when I took a wrong turning ...and always got me back on track.TBH its almost too quick, as its possible to miss the fact you have taken the wrong turning ( I dont like having the audio instructions on) ...its so seamless.Only once did the unit take me completely out of route...and I do believe thats got to be a glitch in the mapping , not a fault with the unit itself. Overall I reckon its a fantastic bit of kit for the money ( £ 338 delivered to my door), and have no hesitation in recommending it. I have not given it excellent because of the very minor points I have raised. But I would rate it 95 - 98% , given its good price, ease of use, and it getting me out of several problems ( finding hotels and fuel for example). Given my traditional scepticism about sat navs, I think for me to praise it so highly is a very good result.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I purchased this Zumo because I could no longer get map upgrades for my old Street Pilot (An excellent sat nav). I also use an MP3 player and blue tooth gizmo on my bikes intercom system so I was attracted to the Zumo to simplify wiring etc. I am reasonably pleased but it does have some serious defficiencies. The blue tooth connection for listening to MP3 files gives extremely poor reception. I have had to use the Audio Output lead to connect it to my Starcom 1 intercom. This gives good stereo reception. The BT Zumo connection to BTM-02 on my Starcom 1 cannot be used for Phone calls unless you use it also for the MP3 link. The only satisfactory method I have found is to use the traditional BT link direct from my phone to the BTM-02 module on the Starcom1. This works great except you cannot use the Zumos dialling features. It is possible to use the BT link for Phone via the Zumo but you then have to accept a very poor MP3 connection. I prefer to plan all my routes on the PC and then transfer them to the SAT NAV. This is much more difficult than on the old Street Pilot. You also have to recalculate the routes on the Zumo after you have imported them or you can get some crazy errors. If you also plan to use this method of route creation I would stongly recommend that you export the routes back to your PC to check the route in detail and note changes made by the recalculation that the Zumo carries out. I also found that if you do not recalculate the downloaded route on the Zumo it can give you some very strange straight line off road tracks. Other than the problems I have outlined the Zumo has a much improved screen and sat finder system. I am reasonably satisfied but it does need some serious work on the BT and PC link systems.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Whilst the Zumo 550 doesn't have the latest features available on the 660 such as 3D junction view, it nevertheless provides clear and easy to follow directions in a robust package. One point of note though. The latest Europe maps are way too big for the internal memory and the owner will either have to be selective regarding the parts of the mapping to load or resort to saving data on the SD card. Other than that... ACE.
Having stuck with conventional maps for years I came to the conclusion that for motorcycle touring a sat nav system would probably enhnace my safety. Chatting with friends gave me to understand that the Garmin Zumo 550 was probably the best compromise so I bought one. It has been used in my car to find an address I needed to go to and did so superbly - I went straight to the address. It has not yet graced my bike owing to the design of it which has meant that I have had to purchase a fitting kit which is unique to my particular machine, a BMW K1200GT. Also I have had to purchase wiring solutions to allow me to connect it to my bike electrics and the Autocom system I have. Unfortunately this has added around £180 to the price of the unit which I had not expected. However I do expect to benefit from it soon as I ride to Wales with friends at the end of April. So far I have found it easy to use and very accurate, though Mapsource is taking some getting used to because I have used Microsoft's Autoroute for a number of years. There are a number of differences, and I have to say some aspects of Autoroute make it easier to use than Mapsource. No doubt I will get used to it in time.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I really was not sure wether to buy it as i thought it was rather expensive.. more so when compared to the TOMTOM i had previously but having had it for a few weeks i have to say its money well spent i thought it was a bit gimicky at first as there were some features that i thought were unecissary but i was pleasntly wrong it is a great bit of kit the mounting system is second to none very well constructed and robust.. the operating system is clear and easy to use and works well with gloves even the MP3 player which i thought i would not use is great and even automaticaly gets louder when you go faster but the voice instructions are still clear and precise even with the music playing if i have any negitive words it is simply that you do not get any bluetooth headphones as part of the package therefore are unable to hear voice commands/warnings until you buy your own but you do get a car mounting kit included to make the GPS unit more versitile.. all i can say if you are looking for a GPS for your bike just go for it.. its a great bit of kit......Vollständige Rezension lesen
