Very Good, but not completely historically accurate...
For the record, I really enjoyed the film "Amazing Grace"; as others have said, it is an inspiring and emotionally moving story. One of the only dispute that I have with this film is the outlandish conception of John Newton that is given through watching his character unfold. Because the movie has the backdrop of the song by John Newton, and also has a running tie between William Wilberforce's fight against Slavery and his friendship with John Newton, I think the person of John Newton should have been a better/closer portrayal of the actual man, John Newton. The movie made him out to be a monkish, crazy, loud, man. However, John Newton was a married man who was a faithful preacher/pastor; he was very active in his community and church, and while he was a former ... For the record, I really enjoyed the film "Amazing Grace"; as others have said, it is an inspiring and emotionally moving story. However, John Newton was a married man who was a faithful preacher/pastor; he was very active in his community and church, and while he was a former slave-shipman, the Lord redeemed him from a life of sin and guilt, and gave him a life of love and light so as to have the ability to write such truths as, "I once was lost, but now am found," and "Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; 'Tis Grace hath brought me safe, thus far, and Grace will lead me Home." What the film failed in providing the audience was an accurate picture of John Newton as he was a man of Hope and Courage in the Lord.

Great. Historically accurate
Movie arrived a day earlier than expected. Wanted to make sure it had subtitles (many say they do & they don’t so we have to return them) We saw it really had subtitles & it captured us immediately. We ended up watching the whole movie

Amazing Grace
The story is actually about the abolitionist movement in its early days. The film maker would have us beleive that the hymn we all know and love played a major role in the movement. While this is based on history, I rather suspect that a considerable amount of it is fiction. Some of it is certainly not as history has recorded it. Still it is an entertaining and thought provoking film concerning the life of William Wilberforce. Go ahead and get it, after all we all need to be entertained, and you just might learn something.The story is actually about the abolitionist movement in its early days. Amazing Grace - An Amazing Film
Other eBay reviewers have done a good job in describing the story line of this historically significant film, so I will give you my opinion on the artistic and technical merits of this fantastic production. The actors were superb, right down to the smallest roles. The set designs and filming locations transport you right into late 18th century England. The scene lighting was perfect and never looked artificial. The costume design and hair/makeup were outstanding. The cinematography was at the pinnacle of the art form- even the scenes in the rain looked like you were actually there. The soundtrack was extremely clean, never muddy, and the background music and title themes were terrific. I didn't see the film on the big screen, but if my DVD is any indication, it must have been ... I really can't believe this movie was ignored for an Oscar. The only other comment I can make is that you should check out the stirring rendition of the religious hymn "Amazing Grace" at the end of the movie. It features a military bagpipe and drum corps accompanied by a military band, and it will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

True story of the struggle to abolish slavery in England before the USA would do the same.
This is the story of the movement to abolish slavery in England led by a member of government and the youngest Prime Minister, which happened long before the US Civil War and Lincoln's struggle to do the same here in the USA. A great piece of history, a great victory, as England led the way.
