Well alot of people on here seem to not comprehend what customized is. A 2.0 cpu with a 7900 gs vid card n 2 gigs of ram with a 100gig drive is "not" customized. The farthest you can take this model and this is fyi the world's "first" overclockable laptop I carried one with during my years in Europe and mine was customized. I had the t7600g overclockable cpu running at 3.16 a 7950 gtx overclcoked beyond belief. I had the 4 gig ram upgrade there are two speeds of ram the m1710 takes pc2 5300 or 6400 I had the 6400. Always use readyboost. There is a way to edit the registry to use "any" usb device I used a 500 gig usb external hard drive once. It gave the l2cache of the cpu a huge boost. Then I spedup the read write time of the external hard drive and the speed increased further. These are customizations. Most of the ones on ebay that say upgraded or customized have 10$ cpus and 30$ video cards a 7900 gs is total junk. It is not even the same chip as the 7900 gtx and 7950 gtx.The 7950 is nothing more then a factory overclocked 7900gtx absolutely identical physically. My personal m1710 that I built from scratch piece by piece since my first one got "lost" out of a hotel room.Has the t7600g running at 3.17 I know a few tricks started programming at 18 and i am 50. I could prolly make it go faster cooling is a major issue though due to the poor case design.I also have the 7950 gtx overclocked 100 ticks past factory settings.4 gigs of blue silicone pc2 6400 hynex ram a 7200 750gb blue silicone on the bottom hard drive. Then I go through the software. This laptop puts out the loudest best sound of any laptop including the 4000$ one I am on now it is a sager np 9570 the one I am writing this on I have ever heard. If setup properly. I am available for help in accomplishing this. It's also still holding the world record for highest resolution of any laptop. It is a fine value and a collectors item. Don't insult it with anything less then the best parts it can take. 110% or stay in bed is my credo on everything especially computers and cars and maybe girls ;). Fast review most of you can not afford a t7600g so go t7600 thats 2.33ghz the 7950gtx 4 gigs system ram at least a 500 gig drive speaking of drives that is another customization I do. I divide the drive with a second partition. The first is the OS second storage and backup image and a system image. A second drive would be better but it would have to be external with this model. My method is fine so long as the entire drive does not die. Simply keep your stuff on the second partition keep the OS and programs on the first and you won't lose anything if you have to reload windows. That's custom! Also all geforce cards have a corresponding qaudro card and you can con the OS into using the vga bios of the geforce version then load the geforce gaming driver versus the qaudro business driver. "rivatuner" is the tool again that's custom. The cards are physically identical other then the info flashed onto the vga bios chip at the factory. If setup properly it is a beast. If setup poorly it is a pos.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I give this laptop a five star rating but must qualify that opinion. I bought my XPS M1710 in late 07 used and it has worked flawlessly ever since. EXCEPT for the lousy NVidia 7900 GTX GPU (graphics card). Beginning in early 2010, the GPU dropped dead and I went through two identical, eBay, used NVidia cards (new from Dell was not available) in very short order. A good deal of online research produced volumns of complaints from other M1710 owners with the same problem. So, I shopped around for a substitute GPU that was less trouble. What I found was an ATi X1400 GPU with dual heat sinks from a Dell Inspiron 9400 that not only fit the M1710 but worked just as well as the Nvidia card and, I bought it. While the ATi GPU only has 256M on board memory as opposed to the Nvidia's 512M, I have noticed no depreciation in performance. In the three and a half years since installing the ATi GPU, I have not had any problems other than a noisy cooling fan. To install this card, I simply downloaded the ATi GPU driver from Dell's website on the support & downloads page for the Inspiron 9400. But, take note, this GPU does NOT support the M1710's docking station port on the bottom of the machine. Other than that, it has worked perfectly and I expect several more years of flawless performance from my beloved XPS laptop. May 30, 2016 An update, I now have owned my XPS M1710 for some eight years and still use it daily. I probably have one of the few still in use. The ATI X1400 GPU is still going strong and even though the entire machine is sorely out-dated (Still running XP SP3) and I have had to replace cooling fans on several occasions, I love this Laptop. The only major problem came in 2014 when a lightning strike took out the motherboard, but I found a $54 new MB on eBay and that fixed that. I expect that advances in technologies will render this machine usless for online browsing in the very near future (Google Chrome doesn't even support XP anymore), but when that happens, I will get a MS Surface or something to go online and retire my beloved XPS to offline duty.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is the kind of laptop that you want to treat as a desktop. You can mod it tons, and for almost 10 years old, mine still is quite adequate. You won't be gaming with crysis on this, so do yourself a favour, look into the 3600M video card, and the T7600G, and 4GB of Ram, I have this all running on my machine and have some heatsinks from other dell laptops (very interchangable) that are more heavy duty on this thing, as well as custom fan controls. For 10 years old almost.....now...this thing is actually still a competitor. It IS possible to get your GPU and CPU overclocked, but in reality, the limits are 700Mhz core GPU / 800Mhz GPU Memory clocks, and 2.66Ghz to the CPU. But hey, even that has yielded awesome performance in Half Life 2, Black Mesa Source, Team Fortress, Battlefield 2 Mods And Crysis on Medium shaders can crobble at 25-30fps. No Direct X 11 possible. So I'd say, for the Direct X 9 experience, it is fantastic and modable. ANYTHING that goes into the E1705 can go into this or the M90. Some things from the M6300 too. For the latest gaming experience..............go get a console honestly, it's a better deal. But if flashy lights that dance to music are what you want and a laptop with quite impressive sound, while giving a good DX9 Desktop replacement experience with a ton of cheap spare parts.....Then THIS IS a pretty damn good fit.Vollständige Rezension lesen
