This movie is an excellent piece of originality in an otherwise predictable market as of late. It takes most of the good qualities of anime and turns it into a very enjoyable watch. fight scenes are well animated and amazing if not a little fantastical. the main characters are fleshed out enough to be likable even the annoying little kid becomes likable in the end also the animation is impressive and fluid along with very nice character designs watching the regular dvd on my 10 year old tv was very nice to watch. now a couple of things that could be better: the conflict is a little convaluded and is not exactly driving but the actual antagonists are interesting and I personally was a little sad to see them get killed off so quickly. some of the extra characters feel tacked on but are ... An Anime Must Have!
If you're a fan of anime this is a movie you should have in your collection! While the story is powerful and timeless the creator of this new technique has advanced the motion effect of the sword fight as well as action in the anime genre. The award-winning style here, though difficult to put in words, is one of bringing a more visceral taste of blade motion and martial fighting style to the game. In slow motion one can see a precision "fan effect" added to the motion of the blades that give the action a rotoscoped feeling. The beauty of this method, though admittedly inconspicuous, brings a freshness to the swordplay anime genre akin to "Ninja Scroll", "Basilisk" and "Bleach" (among many others.) The story itself is a historic fiction placed in feudal Japan and weaves through the story ... If you're a fan of anime this is a movie you should have in your collection! A Chinese entourage, carrying a rather sophisticated but cumbersome timepiece, is in search of a young boy who is a celestially valuable ingredient in the eventual "elixir." With permission from the local shogunate this entourage is on a mission for the Ming dynasty emperor to attempt yet another alchemical concoction to bring immortality to the unnamed Chinese leader. The child, Kotaro, and his loyal dog, Tobimaru, are protected throughout the story by a nameless ronin who was discovered in infancy as the sole survivor of a destroyed/sunken European colonial ship and trained as a samurai. "No name" (the samurai) is faces multiple confrontations from the Chinese escort of highly-trained fighters most of whom are using heroine-like pill therapy that frees them from pain in combat (as well as increasing their fighting prowess through the lack of a pain threshold, etc.) Essentially the battle comes down to a confrontation between "no name" and the leader of Chinese fighters, Luo Lang. Lang is a tall arrogant blond-haired, blue-eyed undefeated martial arts master of presumably Dutch descent- certainly different enough to cause amazement among the Japanese citizenry who have never seen such a genetic combination before. Of specific interest to me personally, aside from the swordplay, was that both the protagonist and the antagonist were of European descent in a story imbued with Japanese themes and culture (not to mention Chinese culture and dialog) acted out with little reference to Europeans or their cultures. It's interesting to see a Japanese director use two Europeans as his main characters and places them at a level of fighting experience where both are unmatched by their Japanese/Chinese peers. The juxtaposition is quite fascinating to watch. The main story was particularly timeless as well and could have easily taken place in any other era of swordplay with only minor cultural editing. While there is some CG intermixed with the expert animation the scenes and artistic values are beautiful and rich with great attention placed to the mise-en-scèn at every turn. Truly a classic of the genre and well worth the experience. I hope you take the opportunity to see it for yourself!

Beautiful, Gripping... Simply Spectacular!
This movie is simply spectacular. Although it's technical rating is NR (not rated), it should be rated R so this is NOT something for kids to watch--despite being animated. The battle sequences were beautifully drawn and are an absolute joy to watch, blood and gore and all; in between you have beautiful landscapes and the heartfelt story of a nameless wanderer and an orphaned boy who by chance end up traveling together. Watch as their relationship grows from tolerance to friendship and hold your breath as one event threatens to tear all that apart... Repeated dialog ties scenes together while cultural references give Sword of the Stranger a feeling of depth and, in some cases, humor. If you've seen this movie online, you may have missed a few things because in the DVD the Chinese has been ... This movie is simply spectacular. After seeing this movie four times, I'm still going back and watching it again. This is a gem that should be in every collection. My only "complaint" is that the Chinese seems incredibly slow. No native speaker would talk so slowly. I suppose if they spoke quickly, though, the subtitles would disappear from the screen before anyone could read them. Again, I do not recommend this movie for kids but if you're an adult (or teen) who wants a story you'll not soon forget and you don't mind watching something animated, this is an absolute must have!
