Difficult to understand why this was banned for years, being described as "child abuse". Not so. Buy it and enjoy the story line and excellent acting.

This film made by Volker Schloendorf is based upon a book written by Gunter Grass. One thing that is quite amazing about this film is that it so successful in fransforming a rather complicated book full of metaphores and analogies into a film that is actually entertaining. The little boy in the film is obsessed in banging his tin drum and simulanously breaking glass by his own ultravox. He is a gnome, a dwarf and a rebellion that creates obstacles and sabotage normal peoples everyday life, often when they are doing something immoral or juvenile wrong. This kind of character is well known from many other fairy tales like 'The lord of the rings' etc. One can easily say that he is a representaive for the small negative devils in everybodys' mind. Most important he lives among (actually inside the brain of ) ordinary people and he is not a demon or an alien devil from the outside. During the film he transforms from the 'Weinachtsmann' which is german for the Christmas gnome (NOT Santa Clause!), to the Gas-man. And when does that happen? Yes, during the war about 1941-42 when the extermination of the jews were on it's peak. Playing the drum is maybe analogous to marching like a robot like in Nurenberg before the war, and braking glass has something to do with the Chrystal Night ?. I'm just guessing here. Anyway, the little dwarf doesn't want to grow up. He is very mother dependent and also takes cover under the stack of his grandma when justice is chasing him. Acoward you might say. Until the war is over that is. Then something remarkable happens. I'm very impressed by the actor that is portraying the gnome called Orcar. He is a real talent and is very convincing in this role. There is a lot of amusing moments in this film too despite the very sereous content, and there is also a vigorous sexuality in some sequences. But you have to see the parallell with German history and mentality the grasp the real message of this film. If you only prefer straigt entertaing movies without symbolism and metaphores this is not for you. Are you interested in history and ethic questions this is as good as it can get on a clever day. P.S. Gunter Grass has recently announced that he himself was a member of the SS during the war, which is quite ironic to think about after seeing this excellent movie. Grass must have done some laundrying in his own concience after the war.Vollständige Rezension lesen
part of the 'new german cinema' movement of the 70s which re evalauated germany to the younger generation of germans, a surreal but somehow believable , fable abou ta child who refuses to grow because the adults world is so immature. some amazing images, great acting, thoroughly recommend it, its not dull like some german film(eg fassbinder/herzog!)very symbolic..not always clear what its being symbolic OF, but thats up to you... a film to make you think..
