THE TAKING OF PELHAM ONE TWO THREE superbly achieves what few other movies do: a successful blend of thrills, style, comedy, drama, suspense and action. It is the precursor for many thrillers of the 1990s, from indie hits like Quentin Tarantino's RESERVOIR DOGS, and more popular, Hollywood vehicles like SPEED.The story focuses on four criminals who hijack a subway car and demand one million dollars from the mayor of New York, threatening to kill one hostage per minute if their demands aren't met. The hijackers are Mr. Blue (Robert Shaw), the crafty and efficient leader; Mr. Green (Martin Balsam), the train driver; Mr. Gray (Hector Elizondo), the hothead; and Mr. Brown (Earl Hindman), a nervous, stuttering man. New York City transit lieutenant Zachary Garber (Walter Matthau) goes above and beyond his call of duty to play negotiator with the hijackers. The camera grabs the viewer by taking him down into dark gritty hallows of the subway tunnels and into the midst of the harrowing situation on the hijacked car. Based on the book by JohnGodey, TAKING OF PELHAM is a true classic that depicts the dark, crime-ridden climate of 1970s New York city.

"Who'd wanna steal a subway train?"
NOTE: The rating is for the DVD itself, not the movie. If I was rating this review based only on the movie, it'd be five stars. Technically speaking this is not the DVD I got. Mine was the original 2000 release with a similar but different cover, but they're asking me to review the new one. But since I'm told that the "new" DVD is basically just a repackaged version of the old one, what the heck? Well, what can I say about 'The Taking of Pelham One Two Three' that hasn't already been said? A bunch of color-themed baddies, led by the ever-awesome Robert Shaw as "Mr. Blue," hijack themselves a subway train and demand a million bucks. It's to police lieutenant Zachary "Z" Garber to stop the crooks and save the hostages. Some shootouts in dimly-lit subway tunnels, and some tense scenes of ... Some shootouts in dimly-lit subway tunnels, and some tense scenes of hero and villain communicating via radio long before 'Die Hard' make 'Pelham' a pretty darn good movie. Also unlike in 'Die Hard,' each of the eighteen hostages has a personality and a time to shine and say something memorable, even if only Bud Carmody (the ill-fated conductor) is given a name in the end credits. So, great movie, now as for the DVD itself...well, it's serviceable. It's widescreen, which is good, but the visual quality is dark and a bit grainy at times, esp. in the tunnel scenes, which is unfortunate for the aforementioned shootouts since it's a bit difficult to tell what's going on. Not impossible, but you'll be rewinding the scenes a couple of times to make sure you saw what you thought you saw. What's annoying is the lack of special features. Even in 2000, DVD's had SOME special features. Rarely anything in the way of documentaries and deleted scenes but usually at least an audio commentary. 'Pelham' gets nothing. Not even, I'm told, in the 2009 rerelease! Forget the bad things perpetrated by Mr. Blue and his gang. THIS is the true crime against 'The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.'

Excellent movie!!!
Such an excellent movie! The characters are perfect in every way. The story is engaging and fun to watch unfold. MUCH better than the 2009 trainwreck of a version.

"Action" movies? You can't go wrong with this one.
Really excellent movie. I saw it many years ago, and all I remembered was the jewel of a final scene. I'm not sure if I ever saw the remake, but who would bother to remake a movie this good?

great movie. like stepping back into the early seventies again. these action movies were so much fun. well made movie from a better time before all the pc nonsense that dictates the how movies are made these days. no brain washing mind numbing dialogue telling you how you should think and feel correctly. just fun popcorn action.

ONE OF THE MOST UNDER-RATED ALL-TIME CLASSICS!!!
One of the all-time great "rainy-day" or "channel-surfing-stop-here" movies. I was so happy to see this out on DVD. Don't expect hours of extra-features; this DVD doesn't need them. I saw this movie originally as a kid on TV, too young to see at at the theater. Rated R but if it were made these days it would either be a PG or PG-13 just due to a couple "n-words" and "f-words" but nothing like the non-stop profanity in today's movies. You could sit down and watch this with most tweens and not get embarassed, but it is anything but a kid movie. It is a brilliant mix of suspense, comedy, drama and crime. It gets going almost right away and isn't bogged down by the typical love-interest or other side stories. It probably lives up to the hype of "awesome thrill-ride". It must have been ... It must have been written originally by someome with inside NY Transit knowledge. It keeps you thinking and never insults your intelligence. There aren't any of those common gaping holes in logic that you have to overlook as you see in some movies. IT IS JUST PLAIN A FUN MOVIE TO WATCH!!! Robert Shaw is typical awesome tough Robert Shaw Mathau is great as a transit police boss THERE IS NOTHING I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THE MOVIE! NO COMPLAINTS! If you haven't seen it, I give my highest recommendations. You will not be disappointed. One of the things that is really date but funny now for different reasons is the good-guy characters being upset about womens-lib and women coming into the male-dominated transit authority. I'm sure it was common workplace dialogue back then and got great laughs but now gets laughs for totally different reasons. Stuff like "I'll be damned if I stop cussing just because they let broads in" Dated but hilarious for different reasons if you picture saying that in the workplace today, in front of "the broad!!" But what makes this a really great movie is the fact that you will want to see it again even though all the surprises and plot points are known. it is STILL just a fun movie to watch. As I said, great to pop in on a rainy day or one of those movies that automatically gets you to stop if you are channel surfing. Now if you have the DVD, you will probably watch it for a few minutes then grab the DVD to put in and probably start back from the beginning. FAR MORE VALUE FOR THE MONEY THAN JUST ABOUT ANY MOVIE OUT THERE NOW!! For less than 10 bucks you can have it in your mailbox in just a few days. ONE WORD OF WARNING? Pay close attention to feedback when you buy this. 98% is not as good as you think. I went cheap when buying and convinced myself that 98% was good enough feedback. One week later I get an out of stock e-mail but the company was still listing it as fo sale with more than 10 available. Go with high feedback and spend the extra dollar or two
