Never heard better sound quality that this deck produces anywhere, top end deck let down by sony's the poor build quality, the auto-load/eject system is flawed as it is made from plastic, you would have thought it would have been made of metal, as a result a common fault occurs where the mecanism does not function properly, due to a belt that rejects the discs becomes loose n ends up failing, can't understand why sony fitted such a flimsy belt to such a high quality piece of kit. such a shame such flaw exists as it was the best hi-fi seperate ever bought

I agree with all that "adam droitwitch" has to say. The minidisc format far out performs the sound quality of ipod and mp3 players even DAB radio and top quality machines such as the MDS-JB 940 and MDS-JB 980 which I use cannot be bettered for versatility in use and for sound recording and reproduction quality. I use an early-ish Walkman model MZ-R55 to gather my material "in the field" with either of two Sony dedicated microphones ECM-MS907 and ECM-MS957 depending on whether I am recording steam trains or music. I can record both classical music and jazz equally effectively though I must admit that the bass end is usually a bit light, a shortcoming of the microphones I hasten to add. However I can balance the bass afterwards so it is not too great an issue. I recently asked a conductor/composer friend of mine to assess the quality of a performance of a new work of his I recorded for him and he said the quality to him was indistinguishable from BBC "on the road" live performances he had recorded with the old BBC Northern Orchestra so good was the sound and editing options available to me. After editing I was able to transfer it all to CD for him. The old bugbears of WOW and flutter no longer apply so accurate is the new technology. The words isignificant, negligable and undetectable spring to mind. A jazz pianist friend of mine often records his gigs onto MD through the amplifier he uses for his keyboard but on one particular jazz festival with a visiting American trombonist he also asked me to record using a microphone to get the feel of live performance brass. After listening to the two versions he thought a mix of the two would be best. Using a MD deck and an MZ-R55 we combined the two which made a perfect match and transferred the whole gig to CDs which he then sold off commercially at subsequent venues. To me that demonstrates the excellence of MD technology. Though I have no experience of the format I understand that DAT recorders produce a somewhat better quality of sound and can deal with dynamic extremes better but since they are more in the professional range I believe that tapes and gear are somewhat more expensive than MDs. You also need much higher specification microphones to get the results. For value for money for those who take their music seriously you can't beat an MDS-JB980 deck if you can find one. Sadly scarcity means that they hold their price well when they do come on the market. A minor problem with minidisc format is that because the discs are so small you can have difficulty documenting all the information you might require onto the disc or its sleeve due to its miniature format. However the plus side to that is its compactness of storage. Though minidiscs are not as readily available on the high street as previously the beauty of it is you can easily erase and record again once you have saved archive material to CD or DVD! My own leisure listening is stored on 78's, vynil, reel to reel tape, cassette, CD, DVD and minidisc. My favourite? - MINIDISC! - so long live the minidisc - and long live the Sony MDS-JB980!Vollständige Rezension lesen
This is a lovely deck that still holds it's own today in the cut-throat industry of digital media! I DJ off minidisc and vinyl which is why I purchased this unit, with vinyl more hands on it is so much more versatile and cost effective these days to aquire ones music off the net digitally and play with it to your hearts content before going to mix with it! .... The one thing I would point out is the limitations of 'NETMD'- the interface to transfer digital music off the PC to MD. Sony have tried to tie your hands with the two forms of software available out there as a medium for doing so! 'OpenMG jukebox' & 'SonicStage' .... This seems to be a real pain to many judging by the forums on the subject! Believe me there are many that have fell foul of this trap wanting to retain audio clarity without compressing the original source file! .... With a little cunning and patience coupled with a good few hours trawling the internet, this is easily overcome and it is totally possible to download music off the net, copy tracks from any source and transfer to MD without compressing retaining 320kbps original format!! So with this in mind the NETMD as limiting as it first comes across really opens up this deck to become a perfect gadget for keeping MD alive!! I never understood why Minidisc never took off!! When it first came out it was so ahead of the game and knocked the socks off CD!! Before editing software and CD burners became mainstream Minidisc was there with it's tough protective case, small, compact design, re-recordable etc etc Beats me why it failed so! To us hardcore supporters of the media you'll love the functions and form of this deck! Easy to navigate, flawless operation, superb clarity and playback reproduction! Party on one and all! Hope you enjoy your deck as much as I do mine!Vollständige Rezension lesen
Sony had a great idea with minidisc, musically they can do anythig that cd can do, minidisc was primerilly designed as a recording medium to take cassette head on and beat it hands down, and top cassette gear is pretty good , it will sound as good as the source whatever that is, sony killed it really with their silly copyright rules, but all in all a great format, betamax vs vhs all over again The mds jb 920,930,940 and 980 are all top quality decks, i bought a 930 new back in 2000, could not fault at the time, the 940 had mdlp, twice as much on one disc in high quality But for me the 980 is top dog, all the high spec of the previous models plus net md, it even makes mp3's sound decent, plug it into the pc with a usb cable and have fun, They fetch good bucks on ebay, and are in high demand, the older models are creeping up too.Vollständige Rezension lesen
