Neal Stephenson's cyberpunk novel, "Snow Crash," plunges the reader into a not-too-distant, science fiction future. The book is set in the arena of California- sort of. America has become a "Burbclave" patchwork of city-states, the Mafia controls pizza delivery, and the Internet- existing as the Metaverse- looks something like every computer scientist's wetdream. Hiro Protagonist- hacker, samurai swordsman, and pizza-delivery driver- follows clues from the Bible, ancient Sumer and high technology, as he tries to thwart an attempt to take control of civilization. When he logs onto Metaverse- an imaginary place entered via computer, much like the Sims, avatars and all- Hiro encounters Juanita Marquez, a "radical" Catholic and computer whiz. She warns him to avoid the emonymous drug Snow Crash and gives him a file labeled Babel- think the Tower of Babel in Genesis. Another friend, sp ok/pk Da5id ignores Juanita's warning and "computer crashes" out of Metaverse into the real world, where he physically collapses. Hiro, Juanita, Y.T.- a freewheeling, skateboard-riding courier- and numerous other Burbclave residents, along with franchise power figures, drive the story arc toward finding out who is behind this bizarre "drug" with ancient roots. "Snow Crash" is a fast-paced futuristic novel that intertwines everything from Sumerian myth to visions of a postmodern civilization on the brink of collapse. Stephenson's science fiction writing is bizarre- yet he ties his fantastic creation to the real world just enough to seem plausible. Although "Snow Crash" heavily leans on Sumerian culture and ideas, the imaginative juxtaposition of ancient and futuristic detail makes this book a fascinating read.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Great speculative science fiction, and a fairly large but not overwhelmingly huge cast of interesting characters. Futuristic and gritty, and still mind-blowing, all at the same time. Cool motorcycles, sword fights, super-skateboards, stylized cyberspace, evil guys, with a healthy dose of Mesopotamian legend/pseudo-history thrown in. This was my first Stephenson novel, and have been re-reading it over the years and recommend it to friends when I can (then try to buy a new book when my friends are slow in giving it back!)

I ordered this book on the suggestion of a friend, and it's turned out to be a very good read. So far I'm quite happy with it. The story chronicles the life of a freelance hacker who starts the story as a "Deliverator" for the mob's pizza franchise called Cosa Nostra Pizza Delivery in Southern California. From what I could tell of the world he lives in, it's in an early 21st century United States in which the government has collapsed and now comprised of many corporate run city states throughout the former nation. I'm still in the first few chapters, so I couldn't really say much more about the story, but so far it's been very well written and enjoyable.
With characters like Hiro Protagonist --hacker, samurai swordsman, and pizza-delivery driver, how can you not like it? It has designer drugs gone riot (Snow Crash) and lots of tongue-in-cheek cyberpunk humor. Less pretentious than Gibson- I love his work, but it's not light readint- it's worth whatever bean or ruble you have to toss to get it. If you don't like the genre, I would still recommend it as a fun read.
Shipped in beautiful condition. It was a gift to my husband and he loved it!
