I bought this CD because of the revolutionary sound I heard from various Royksopp songs/tracks on Internet radio. I was caught a little off guard the first time I heard the album, but a second and third listen gave me a better feel for it. This album seems to exhibit an electronic group with great potential trying various song styles to perfect their recipe of what they excel at. Clearly the pure electronic songs are expertly done, but when they add vocal the results vary. Some songs are a little "poppy" or "R&B", and some of these are not really failures, but rather not as excellent as the electronic foundation that they set. However, the track "What Else is There?" is a clear winner, once they give the microphone to the female vocalist on the album and step away from the male vocals. They also are clearly less good at trying to sound peppy and "sunshiny," but rather excellent at more "cloudy" and melancholy kind of music. This album is a mix of successes and failures at trying to find their new sound. It seems to me not so much an electronic group adding vocals, but rather the birth of an electronic group with vocals. Overall, I felt it was well worth the experience, and I can easily skip a few of the tracks.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This Royksopp album is definitely a different sound for the duo. Still emphasizing clean, energetic electronic sound, this album also adds in vocals on most of the tracks. I read several other reviews that said this album was a "radical departure" before purchasing, but decided to go ahead and get it anyway. I really like Royksopp's debut album Melody A.M. (4/5), so I hoped for the best with this new album. I have to say that I'm a little disappointed with this one so far. Maybe it'll grow on me.
Royksopp album "The Understanding" opens with electronica, shifts to great techno, finishes with soothing electronica. Every track carefully crafted.

this is also another purchase do to KNDS I have to rate this as excellent still even tho there is 1 song I could do without "#3-49 percent" other than that song.... This cd is easy to listen too and very enjoyable
I expected good things from this album and while it does have it's moments I have to say that this CD is way too poppy. I would have liked to hear less of an MTV influence and more experimental electronica. Some songs I can't even listen to. Did they sell out? I'll leave that to you to decide. 3 Stars.
