CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND is Steven Spielberg's extraordinary film about a man named Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) who becomes obsessed with meeting extraterrestrials after encountering a UFO on an abandoned road one night. Against the wishes of his wife (Teri Garr) and children, Neary, along with another witness to the sighting (Melinda Dillon), travels to a mysterious mountain where the government has built a landing strip hoping to attract the aliens. Director François Truffaut costars as Claude Lacombe, one of the organizers of the project. Spielberg hoped to follow up the huge success of JAWS with a low-budget film that would be an easy shoot, but, thanks in part to the complicated special effects, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS quickly snowballed into being an expensive endeavor but a commercial and artistic success. No one who has seen the film has ever looked at a plate of mashed potatotes the same way again.

Worth the Wait
Finally a comprehensive edition of this movie is available on disc. Previous versions are OK, but this one actually has three versions of the movie together on one disc. The interactive features showing where each version differs from the other is also cool, but fans will know most of the differences anyway. This one includes the original theatrical release, which has become hard to come by as the subsequent special edition and director's cut dominated as the versions most widely available. I can honestly say I never actually saw the original until now, and I'm not sure if you can even find it in a stand-alone version. It has become a trend for popular sci-fi films to be replaced by subsquent "special editions" or "director's cut," making the one that started it all hard to find until ... You could say it's all just a marketing campaign to get you to keep buying the same movie, and you are probably right. But this edition is a must for any fan of the film, or if you have always liked the movie but never got around to buying it. I would suggest the Blu-Ray version over the DVD. Might as well upgrade just once! Just keep in mind that while most DVDs will play in most Blu-Ray players, Blu-Ray discs will not play in a DVD player. Hopefully you already knew that!

Happy lovely movie!!!!
This movie will always engage me no matter how often I see it! It really makes me think about other people living on other planets and we don't always have to assume they are going to be mean and hateful.

It has all three versions of the movie. I only watched director's cut but glad to have the option to re-visit the other two versions If I feel like it.
