This lens differs from the later G versions in that it offers no image stabilisation, and has max apertures of f3.5 going to f5.6 at the tele end. Having said that, you can pick up a good used example of the AFS-D version for hundreds of pounds less than the G VR F4. Optically, it is great as a general purpose walking around lens and the 24mm is great for landscapes on FX cameras. The loss of 1 stop of light at 120mm is no big deal, you can up the ISO or use a tripod. As a general purpose lens for an FX Sensor camera, it can't be beaten for the price. Warning! It only works in autofocus on camera bodies with the mechanical drive in the camera body, and the focus throw is very short, so the gearing is quite high ratio. This means that if someone grabs and twists the focus ring while the autofocus selector is in "A" mode, he (or she) could damage the gearing of the autofocus by forcing the mechanism to strip its gears. Check that the one you buy focuses smoothly both on and off the camera body, in manual mode.Vollständige Rezension lesen
This lens certainly lived up to many of the negative reviews on the internet (I was lured by the occasional very positive review). I'm using this on a D810 which generally allows me to get away with the very cheapest of basic lenses - sadly not with this one! The image seems very soft, and a lot of post processing required to get something half decent. I am a huge fan of Nikon (on my 3rd DSLR now), however this is my first taste of disappointment - how did they manage to get it so wrong?

This was predicted as a crap lens by all the reviews and so it was ..soft and useless ..add to this Photographers bag tried to sell me one with so much wear it wobbled like a ball jount ..money refunded.
The Nikon street sweeper as this lens was called in it's hay day. This lens was the first do it all professional lens and sold for £360/420 sterling when first released in the late nineties. Today it is still a fine bit of kit, with plenty of metal and a few plastic components. No V.R. to go wrong and full control over aperture settings and will manual focus when required. The only downside is distortion at the widest 24mm. settings, but if you are that concerned, buy a prime 24mm. lens for buildings etc. I would recommend this lens to anybody and at the prices their are going for £80-£185 for a boxed almost mint example very good value for money. If you shop around I picked my one up on E-bay for £106.00 including postage complete with box/filter/hood and instructions. It's the best buy in town!Vollständige Rezension lesen
A great, all purpose 'street sweeper' len. Heavy, yes, but impressive for the money. The zoom range is useful for most purposes and I've had no experience of vignetting that others seem to find.
