Azumanga Daioh certainly impressed me. Having no idea of what to expect with this series, I was very, very pleasantly surprised. The primary characters are wonderfully written and, for the most part, nicely explored. While the story focuses on the everyday relationships and struggles of a group of Japanese high school girls, it manages to at once remain light and fanciful, but also convey a sense of genuine growth and development. The series creators maintain this exploration of friendship all the while never allowing the series to take itself too seriously, managing to maintain a consistent sense of humor until the very end. Voice acting for the series was nothing short of spectacular and serves to once again clarify just how much strong voice work lends to a series. As always, the inimitable Kira Vincent-Davis creates a truly unforgettable character in her work bringing Osaka to life. Ms. Vincent-Davis’ work on that character alone makes the English Dub worth listening to. Jessica Boone, Lucy Christian and Christine Auten also perform spectacularly. In total, I found the voice acting work for this series to be exceedingly well done and well cast. The only area in which I could truly find fault with the Azumanga Daioh Class Album set, however, was in the lack of liner notes of any sort. Considering how deeply the series is rooted in contemporary Japanese culture and that culture’s humor, offering something to perhaps clarify certain references, or even give background to characters and settings is almost essential. Though ADV have done a great job with the dub in trying to bridge the cultural gaps, something more would have been a great way to get an even better understanding of the copious humor and references found throughout. I understand ADV would not want to essentially punish those who purchased the original releases by adding extras to its Thinpacks, however I think this set would have been much better served with that inclusion. I may even go so far as to suggest something along these lines is actually essential to getting the most enjoyment out of the series. In conclusion, I was truly impressed and more than a little surprised by Azumanga Daioh and would recommend it very highly to anyone.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I love this series! It's hilarious and at the same time, it's quite poignant. The child prodigy Chiyo-chan, the ever cool Sakaki, loud-mouth Tomo, ordinary Yumi, and airheaded "Osaka" as well as the two [best friends from high school] teachers and that one other teacher, Kimura-sensei make for such a fun, enlightening experience in high school! Through cultural festivals, and visits to Chiyo-chan's house, the fun never ends. And the ending? It's just touching. Makes me wish I had friends like that in high school. And don't forget --- get it together! Azumanga Daioh is a slice-of-life anime. And the manga is as good as the anime! Very well done voice characters both in Japanese and English. Fantastic animation. Five stars. It's truly one of those collection that you can watch over and over again. Without getting annoyed with it. Though, Tomo might soon get on your nerves!Vollständige Rezension lesen
Azumanga Daioh is an unusual anime. It lacks many of the cliches that you might expect from Japanese animation. Regardless, as others have called it, a "series about nothing" ended up being an excellent show. Basically, the show chronicles the lives of several high school students as they go through the three years of high school in Tokyo, Japan. They are: Chiyo-chan: a child prodigy that enters high school at age 10 and is quite possibly the epitome of cuteness, especially in her penguin suit. Yomi: a girl that is pretty much normal, and often quite concerned with her weight Tomo: a girl that is "uselessly energetic", but still somewhat likable Osaka: a girl that moved to Tokyo and is very "slow" but has quite a vivid imagination and talent for abstract thinking Sakaki: the tall, busty girl that everybody thinks is cool, but she just wishes she could be small and cute. She also has an obsession with everything cute, with a huge emphasis on cats Kagura: a fairly stereotypical jock, but she is also a good and honest friend Kaorin: a girl that is obsessed with Sakaki to an almost scary extent Yukari: she is a foreign language teacher that often acts more like a student than a teacher. However, she is also a very good and caring person at times, but letting her drive you anywhere is asking to be scarred for life. Nyamo: she is a P.E. teacher who has been friends with Yukari since they were in high school. Unlike Yukari, she is much more mature than her co-worker. Kimura: the only man in the show, and he is a classical literature teacher that chose his profession because he "likes high school girls" Even though the show doesn't have a true "plot", it is still a truly engaging show, and you can't really watch episodes out of order as there is a natural progression to the series. It's truly amazing how entertaining watching the lives of these characters can be. From the events with Sakaki and Kamineko (the evil gray cat), to their summer trips, to the annual sports festival (kind of similar to field day in our elementary schools) and cultural festival (basically the students of each class put on some kind of event for the entertainment of the other students and surrounding community). It's kind of hard to describe, but it's mostly just funny, but occasionally quite touching as well. Overall, I highly recommend this series to anybody looking for a highly enjoyable series that just makes you feel good after watching each episode. Also, all you guys that noticed that the cast is almost entirely female shouldn't shy away from this series as I'm not the only guy I know that really enjoyed it. Highly recommended, and definitely among the best anime series I've ever seen. Score: 5/5Vollständige Rezension lesen
I first watched this series on my computer. The animation was crisp, the subs were done by fans (and excellently), and the dubbing was great. The only reason I gave the DVD set a 4 star rating is because the fan sub had so much extra (explaining japanese jokes and culture that otherwise didn't make sense). Everything else was top shelf and I didn't see any bad subs. As for the story... The movie takes place in a junior high school in Japan. Following a group of young japanese school girls you get to see their perspective of the world around them, and the way it is told the youths seem more mature than any of the adults. The characters are very developed and and engrossingly likable. You will find yourself laughing at physical humor and nonsense, tearing up when something is sad, and alot of the times just smiling stupidly to yourself at some youthful innocence. It is a story about growing up and friendship that anyone can enjoy. If you breath air you should buy this set. Anime fan or not. And I have also found that this anime may change some peoples minds about what anime is. A FANTASTIC anime that developed from a 4 cell comic strip. A must have.Vollständige Rezension lesen
I was sort of afraid that I might end up with a bootleg product because I've been searching for this anime in its entirety for years, and I've only ever found it selling for no less than 50 dollars with the highest being 100 or more. Not only was my item legit, but it was in practically mint condition and at an affordable price. It got here fast, and I'm very happy with my purchase. I would definitely buy from this seller again.
