A DVD set containing two war films that pull no punches in showing the viewer the confusion and injustice of modern warfare.<BR>In TEARS OF THE SUN Lieutenant A.K. Waters (Bruce Willis) and his elite team of Navy SEALS have their work cut out for them when they are dispatched to war-torn Nigeria with orders to rescue an American citizen, Dr. Lena Kendricks (Monica Bellucci). The mission is pretty cut and dry except for one glitch: Dr. Kendricks will have to abandon the natives to whom she has been providing healthcare and those that work in the mission where her rudimentary hospital is located. Of course, Dr. Kendricks refuses to leave without her people, forcing Lieutenant Waters to choose between completing his orders as directed or putting the lives of his men on the line by helping the refugees cross the border to Cameroon on foot. To complicate matters, the group is being pursued by militant guerillas who destroy everything in their path. Willis is in top form as Lieutenant Waters, a touch-as-nails military man who confronts his conscience and makes decisions that surprise even him as he finds himself influenced by the stubborn Dr. Kendricks.<BR>BLACK HAWK DOWN is based on a true story. On October 3, 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force participated in a covert operation in Mogadishu, Somalia that went horribly wrong. Sent to abduct two lieutenants of a vicious Somali warlord, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by hostile militia. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and many men lost their lives. Mark Bowden of the Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of the battle in his exhaustively researched, critically acclaimed book, BLACK HAWK DOWN, and filmmaker Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) and screenwriter Ken Nolan have done an amazing job of bringing the dramatic story to the screen. Like Bowden's book, the film does not thoroughly examine the context of the conflict, but gives a detailed and intense blow-by-blow account of the fighting. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Josh Hartnett as a competent but nervous Ranger sergeant leading his first mission, Ewan McGregor as a "desk jockey" who excels when sent into combat, Eric Bana (THE INCREDIBLE HULK) as a cocky and enigmatic Delta, and Ron Eldard as a downed Black Hawk pilot.

A must watch.
Tears of the Sun is good war film with a simple story captured well. Very realistic and belivable, no OTT bits also. It follows the mission of Bruice Willis and his squad sent to recsue a doctor of US origin. Once rescuing her and realising that the innocent villagers will become more stats. Bruice Willis decides to turn the chopper around and head back in to war zone. And instead are faced with the task of walking out the civilians to the nearest safe zone. Along the way they become the hunted and concludes with a stand your ground fire fight as there out numbered and on their own. Overall good realism - includes jump from herc, hi-tech GPS gear, looks autentic with US jungle kit M4's, 249's, snipers and silenced pistols and SMG's. Hand signals, knife kills, camo the opposite to some Rambo shoot erm up film. Black Hawk Down is another must have war film. Apparently isn't as good as the book but I don't think many film versions of books are anyway. I think very realistic but people who have read the book think otherwise. Having watched the film with Directors Commantry, one part spings to mind where they had the same pilot fly in his AH-6 Littlebird during part of the film, fly exactly and do exactly what he did when he did it in the mission in real life. So basicly played the part of himself acting out what he did. The film is about a mission to take out a key figure of the Malisher but during the operation, a Black Hawk is hit and crashes deep into hostile territory. Following this, the situatin goes from bad to worse with a second crash and the Humvey convoy ground treoops getting hammered. After a heroic effort of US forces, they finally leave the city the next day from what was probably their "finest hour" so to speak. Again great realism, the cast were given basic training before shooting the film also done in Band of Brothers. Great shots of the helicopters, fast roping, shooting scenes, explosions, people being shot at, use of guns etc. Again another watchable war film with a moving story that follows the troops on the front line.

Soldier (Bruce Willis) breaks the rule of a lifetime, goes against his orders, and tries to do what she asks. Some gruesome images of mans inhumanity to man, are part of a fantastic film. Looks amazing on Blu-Ray. Always makes me cry at the end. . Black Hawk Down is an amazing piece of filmwork. Telling a basic true story of several terrible mistakes/under estimations made by the US in Africa, resulting in a group of troops fighting for their lives to escape a city turned against them. Looks incredible on Blu-Ray. Special effects are amazing, if gruesome. What can I say, it's one of those films you either connect with or you dont. I did and it is very moving - I was pleased it was not just a typical war type movie but one with a meaning and went against the system. Bruce played his part very well although if this had happened I think the team would have just done there job and got out! This film is not about action (as there is very little of it) but makes you ask what would you do and how would you deal with the situation.
