Brian De Palma's commercial breakout, based on a novel by Stephen King, helped launch a whole slew of teen-based horror films, and Carrie the blood-spattered prom queen has taken her throne in the pantheon of modern American myth. High school girls played by Amy Irving (in her film debut), P.J. Soles, and Nancy Allen plot to avenge themselves on ostracized fellow student and budding telekinetic Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) after they get in trouble for pelting her with tampons. When they get popular boy Tommy Ross (William Katz) to be her date for the prom, the stage is set for some heart-rending cruelty and fiery retribution. De Palma expertly uses split screens, slow motion, color filters, and tracking shots to imbue the proceedings with a haunting, allegorical elegance. Piper Laurie plays Carrie's mentally ill, devoutly Christian mom; she's brilliant, as is Spacek. John Travolta has a memorable pre-SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER role as one of the girls' beer-guzzling boyfriends. There was finally a sequel in 1999, as well as a short-lived Broadway musical.

Carrie
Every high school has its misfit, and Bates High school has Carrietta White, played with heartbreaking conviction by Sissy Spacek. Her posture, frumpy clothes, and timid mannerisms make her the object of scorn from her classmates, who miss no opportunity to tease her. Carrie doesn't even know her own body, explaining why she freaks out in the gym shower where she has her first (!) period. But the minute the movie introduces us to her religious fanatic mother (done to near camp effect by Piper Laurie), it's easy to see why she's such a basket case. And as if that weren't enough, Carrie has the "gift" of telekinesis. She uses these powers to unleash hell on the night of her prom, where her main tormentor Chris Hargenson (a wonderfully catty Nancy Allen) plays a vicious prank on her. "Carrie" ... "Carrie" is not only my favorite movie by director Brian DePalma, but it's also my favorite film based on a Stephen King novel. DePalma's touch is all over this movie, and that's mainly evident through his signature camerawork. What also makes this movie such a horror classic is the way it builds suspense to a near-intolerable high. The scene where Carrie and Tommy Ross are crowned king and queen is done in agonizingly slow motion, creating a buildup of tension that literally ties a knot in your stomach. The movie also works thanks to the performances from Spacek and Laurie, both of whom earned Oscar nominations. The DVD has a very interesting documentary featuring interviews with the cast (sans John Travolta, who played the doofus Billy Nolan) as well as a photo gallery, a trailer, and another documentary on the technical aspects of the film. After over a quarter century since its release, "Carrie" remains a convincing movie that excels both as a revenge fantasy and a horror story.

The girls at Bates High School also harass Carrie, with Chris Hargensen (Nancy Allen) being especially cruel. Carrie experiences her first period while showering after gym class, and, due to her sheltered life, becomes hysterical, thinking she is dying. Popular girl Sue Snell (Amy Irving) notices Carrie's horror, leading to the other girls throwing tampons and sanitary pads at her before Miss Collins (Betty Buckley) intervenes. As Carrie becomes more frantic, a light bulb bursts just before Miss Collins tells the other girls to leave. Miss Collins brings Carrie to the principal's office, and while consoling her, the principal calls Carrie by the wrong name, ... Margaret, who walks from door to door "spreading the gospel of salvation through Christ's blood", receives a call from Miss Collins about the locker room incident and tells Carrie that the "curse of blood" is punishment for sin, not puberty. She locks Carrie in a closet and forces her to pray. In her bedroom that night, a miserable Carrie stares at her mirror until it shatters. The next day, English teacher Mr. Fromm reads a poem to the class, written by Tommy Ross (William Katt), Sue's athletic boyfriend. Fromm invites the class to critique Tommy's work but mocks Carrie when she claims the beauty of the poem, which irks Tommy. Sue, feeling guilty for teasing Carrie, convinces Tommy to take Carrie to the prom and show her a good time. Carrie suspects she may have a telekinetic gift, and researches it in the library. While there, Tommy asks Carrie to prom but she flees, fearing another trick. After a pep talk from Miss Collins, Carrie reluctantly accepts Tommy's invitation when he later approaches her at her home. Carrie tells her mother that she is going to the prom, and Margaret insists the prom is an occasion of sin, refusing to let her attend. However, Carrie causes the windows of the house to slam shut, revealing her telekinesis. Margaret believes this is Satan's power, but Carrie again insists she will go to the prom, and Margaret reluctantly lets her. Meanwhile, Miss Collins berates the girls who tormented Carrie in the locker room, subjecting them to a week-long boot-camp-style detention, threatening them with suspension from school and the prom if they do not attend. All the girls show remorse except for Chris, who holds a deep hatred for Carrie. After Chris throws a fit, Miss Collins smacks her in the face and bans her from the prom. Chris tells her delinquent boyfriend, Billy Nolan (John Travolta), that she wants revenge on Carrie and goes with Billy and other kids to a farm where Billy kills a pig. After draining the pig's blood into a bucket, Chris has Billy place the bucket above the school's stage. Chris makes a deal with her friend Norma Watson (P.J. Soles) and Billy's friend Freddy to rig the election of prom king and queen so Tommy and Carrie win. As Carrie gets ready for the evening, her mother tells her that everyone will laugh at her. Carrie defies her mother, leaving with Tommy.

This DVD is about 3 high school girls who plot to avenge themselves on ostracized fellow student and budding telekinetic Carrie White after they get in trouble for pelting her with tampons. When they get popular boy Tommy Ross to be her date for the prom, the stage is set for some heart-rending cruelty and fiery retribution. I've always been a huge fan of Stephen King's books which is why I bought this DVD. The book is brilliant and is better than the DVD but not by much. As a fan of blood and guts I found that this film makes for a great night in!This DVD is about 3 high school girls who plot to avenge themselves on ostracized fellow student and budding telekinetic Carrie White after they get in trouble for pelting her with tampons. scary
this film is about carrie- hence the title. the film is absolutly terrifying and it is a classic horror movie. the last scene which carrie is at her prom and wearing a beautiful dress and then something happenens to her.
