Product Information

William Friedkin unleashes his flare for tense action and gripping suspense in RULES OF ENGAGEMENT, an exciting military legal thriller that examines the moral gray area of combat experience and reflects on the ethos of the American military in the late 20th century. When the U.S. embassy in Yemen is stormed by anti-American protesters, Marine Colonel Terry Childers (an intense Samuel L. Jackson) rescues Ambassador Mourain (Ben Kingsley) from the explosive siege, and under fire from snipers within the crowd, he orders his men to return fire, resulting in many civilian casualties. To appease international outrage at an apparent war crime, the U.S. government court-martials Childers for violating the Marine's "rules of engagement," and his only hope rests on Marine lawyer Colonel Hayes Hodges (Tommy Lee Jones), a veteran who owes Childers his life for, ironically, a war crime committed by Childers in the Vietnam War. An intense, chiaroscuro courtroom drama and brutal combat film, RULES OF ENGAGEMENT takes a difficult look at the moral ambiguity of life in combat and the value of guilt, honor, and loyal sacrifice in the duty to one's country.

  • Rules Of Engagement

This film is similar to many films of this genre in that it the tale of two ageing army (or marines in this case!) buddies allying to each other in time of need.....however unlike the usual All American Propoganda films often churned out by the American film industry this film takes a rather critical look at the politics involved in combat. Both actors are on top form and the tale does enough to make the film enjoyable. A good film to watch if only to see a movie that looks behind the usual American back patting style associated with war movies.

  • Rules of Engagement

Having the seen the film before it is one of those of films that I "kept meaning to buy". The film is about a highly respected and decorated US Army soldier Terry Childers (Samuel L. Jackson) fight for justice. Sent to retrieve the US Ambassador (Ben Kingsley) to Yemen after a protest becomes violent. Childers is involved in a fire fight which results in the death of nearly 100 Yemeni protestors. Upon returning to the United States the colnel is held responsible for the death of "innocent protestors" in Yemen and court martialed under charges he claims he did not commit. Childers enlist's the help of his close friend (Tommy Lee Jones) who served with him in Vietnam to act as his defence attorney to help him in his case. However the path to justice is hampered by lies, betrayl and a crisis ...

  • not as good 2nd time round

at the moment im going through a phase of buying films i think are classics, sadly this is not one of them. remembering back i thought this film was great and one of them that slipped under the radar, but on second viewing it was average at best, although the cast line up suggests otherwise. it a courtroom drama that lacks an edge with average acting and average plot, there's no major surprises or twists its a film that you should only watch if ur bored and wouldn't suggest paying a lot of money for.
