I am not impressed!
unfortunately this book falls far too short of explaining the reality of managing a manufacturing facility. It attempts to do so in such a "layman's" almost childish terms that people who will be impressed are probably the ones who never managed a facility and people that know what are queuing techniques and took at least one course in Industrial engineering will consider this book elementary and even laughable. Now, I understand that a typical plant manager has to go against the accountants and the financial analysts in their discussions of bottle necks, throughput, inventory control, etc.... but hopefully the upper management is astute enough and is accepting of the ideas that (for example) running a machine at a 100% might be efficient in terms of cost but will possibly create overruns ... unfortunately this book falls far too short of explaining the reality of managing a manufacturing facility. enlightening fiction
Just remember that it's fiction. Everyone working in a manufacturing environment should read this book just to stay fresh and motivated to the big picture - but remember, it's fiction. The story has a purpose and the author is trying to make a point. Most of it is fairly obvious but in todays business / manufacturing world, the obvious is often hidden away by layers and layers of policy and lost vision,not to mention years of misdirection. Enjoy the read for what it is.Just remember that it's fiction. Everyone working in a manufacturing environment should read this book just to stay fresh and motivated to the big picture - but remember, it's fiction. Must Read for business and manufacturing types!
Great book! I am only in 100+ pages. Very well thought out in the sense that it uses a real world story in order to convey the message. You might find things you never thought about before. Great for anyone who wants to be better at manufacturing or business as a whole.

The Goal
The author made the book a story instead of just facts. Gave valid examples of true life situations. Goldratt did a great job of keeping the reader interested in what's gonna happen next. I'm not a big fan of reading, before this I'd only read two books frot to back, I can finally say that I've read three books that way thanks to this wonderful book. Required reading for anyone in manufacturing
This book should be required reading for anyone in manufacturing. The lessons are succinct and easy to understand. The theory of constraints is always applicable and so often misunderstood. This book details that the goals of a manufactring organization should be to increase throughput (goods that can be sold to make a profit, not just inventory), decrease WIP (work in process as this is costly and valuable), and decrease operating costs. Very worthwhile, easy read. I have bought a number of these and given them to engineers and plant managers with whome I work. Rob Greene - TEC automation, Inc. Capital equipment - Automation SalesThis book should be required reading for anyone in manufacturing. The lessons are succinct and easy to understand.
