Best Actress In A Leading Role 1996 - Susan Sarandon
Additional Information
This acclaimed film traces the relationship between a death-row inmate and the local nun to whom he turns for spiritual guidance in the days leading up to his scheduled execution. Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn) has been convicted of the rape and murder of two young lovers and is awaiting execution. Susan Sarandon plays Sister Helen Prejean, a nun who has devoted herself to God and to helping the less fortunate. Prejean faces a moral crisis as she tries to reconcile her anti-death penalty views with the truth of Poncelet's actions and the pain felt by the victim's families.

  • Whose side are you on?

Dead Man Walking is an amazing though-provoking film directed by Tim Robbins, based on the book of the same name, which tells the true story of Sister Helen Prejean (Susan Sarandon), who establishes a special relationship with Matthew Poncelet (Sean Penn), a prisoner on death row after being convicted of rape and murder. Based on her true-story book, the film gives insight into the arguement for and against capital punishment. I first saw it as part of my degree in Criminology as the film examines the issue carefully whilst telling the story of the relationship between the nun and convict. Deservedly the director and actors were nominated for Oscars, Sarandon winning hers, as did Bruce Sprinsteen for his beautiful theme song from the film. I don't want to go into the story too much for ...

  • Dead man walking.

This film deservedly won Oscars when it came out. It is based on a true story about a nun, Sister Helen Prejean, (portrayed by Susan Sarandon who won an Oscar), who decides to act as a spiritual advisor to Matthew Poncelet, (played by Sean Penn, who was nominated for an Oscar), who is on death row awaiting execution for a vicious murder. Poncelet is an extremely angry and complex man who Sister Helen is dedicated to help him find redemption. Can Sister Helen help this evil murderer and save his soul before he is executed? The film really succeeds in making you think about the nature of faith as Sister Helen is severely tested. This is an extremely powerful film and the acting from all the cast is wonderful. A truly absorbing film.

  • Excellent movie

Susan Sarandon plays a nun who counsels a condemned-to-die convict, played by Sean Penn. I thought Penn was brilliant in his role but it was Sarandon who won the acting Oscar. The movie sets out the pros and cons of the death penalty. A thought provoking movie and made highly watchable by the two leads.
