The masochist says to the sadist, "Hurt me." The sadist replies, "No." Everybody's happy. This strange balance plays heavily into the Steven Shainberg-directed SECRETARY, based on a short story by Mary Gaitskill. Lee Holloway (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is a troubled young woman with a secret, destructive addiction fueled by her mother's overprotectiveness and her father's alcoholism. Sheltered and wholly dependent on other people, Lee's only form of self-expression is in this private, painful habit. That is, until she meets her new boss, the lawyer E. Edward Gray (James Spader), who hires her as his secretary. It is exciting for Lee to hold down a job, even if she is a basket case in the office. Mr. Gray watches Lee, studies her, and slowly begins to correct both her typing errors and her personality flaws. At first Mr. Gray's dominance appears scary and overbearing, a true threat to Lee's naive, fragile psyche. But as the film carefully develops these unique characters, revealing their odd strengths and weaknesses, it becomes delightfully clear that Lee and Mr. Gray can genuinely help each other. SECRETARY is a bright, atmospheric movie that shines a light on the "fun" in this dysfunctional relationship, while using brilliant performances by Gyllenhaal and Spader to illustrate the benefits of sadomasochistic love.

    Oh !! my Edward spank me, do it again

    This kinky love story features a standout performance by Maggie Gyllenhaal, an offbeat young actress in her first starring role. Gyllenhaal plays Lee, a nervous girl who compulsively cuts herself, who gets a job as a secretary for Edward, an imperious lawyer (James Spader, an old hand at tales of perverse affection). Edward's reprimands for typos and spelling errors begin with mild humiliation, but as Lee responds to his orders--which are driven as much by his own anxieties and fears as any sense of order--the punishments escalate to spankings, shackles, and more. Secretary walks a fine line. It finds sly humor in these sadomasochistic doings without turning them into a gag, and it takes Lee and Edward's mutual desires seriously without getting self-righteous or pompous.     Love, but not as you know it.

    Love stories don't come much more bizarre than this touching tale of a sadomasochistic relationship. Lee (Maggie Gyllenhaal) becomes secretary and under the control of Edward (James Spader). He triggers unexpected desires in the delicate young Lee, and using refined control techniques, provides her with confidence as well as sexual revelation. Spader and Gyllenhaal are excellent as two loners who realise they're perfectly matched, and there is some very dark humour throughout. Highly recommended.

    Secretary DVD

    This DVD arrived promptly and was brand new. I bought it because I recall reading interesting reviews about it when the movie came out, but I don't think the movie was shown at a cinema near me. The film deals with controversial topics, which would not be to everyone's taste. I enjoyed watching this film, but it wasn't as brilliant as some of those reviews in 2004 seemed to suggest.
