This is a top-notch horror film; one of my top ten films in this genre, based on the equally excellent novel by Tom Tryon which I read and enjoyed many years ago. The "opening the keg" scene is a shocker by all standards. Don't miss this one!

The twin boys who played the lead characters were very talented, along with the woman who played the grandmother. The story was very spooky, especially when the twist is revealed. An interesting study of a psychotic child and the havoc he wreaks on his family/neighbors. An excellent thriller, so if that's your cup of tea, this movie is for you.

Set in 1935, identical 11 year old twins Holland and Niles spend the summer playing on the family farm. Holland, the older of the two is the dominant brother. Both are mischievous, but also exhibit a far darker side. What is the secret of the ring and the other mysterious object Niles carries in a tobacco tin? Observant viewers might figure the mystery out, there are plenty of clues throughout the movie. Uta Hagen is excellent as the Russian born grandmother Ada. The twins are played by Chris and Martin Udvarnoky in their only film appearance, and they both do an excellent job. Probably not a good watch for very young viewers, but if you enjoyed The Good Son, you’ll enjoy this also.
First, if you haven't seen this movie before, don't read the back of the DVD case! For some reason I'll never understand, they give away a very important part of the movie in the description there. Having stated that, this movie was made in the early 70's and still holds up extremely well, over 30 years later. Based on the novel by Thomas Tryon, the story centers around Holland and Niles, twins with a supernatural bond. The twins who portrayed them were truly exceptional, natural actors. The Other also stars Uta Hagen who is wonderful as Ada the grandmother, and Victor French who later appeared in Little House On The Prairie is Mr. Angelini. There's also a very young John Ritter as the twins' brother in law. The acting is superb and the movie, set in 1930's rural Connecticut, manages to be dark and creepy even during a sunny summer. You get mystery, suspense, murder (without much gore), tragic "accidents," and it manages to be quite scary with very few special effects. The plotline stands on its own, but the setting and great acting make it a really good movie. It's difficult to go into the plot very much without giving away anything, but just when you think you've figured out the secret, there's an even bigger one awaiting. I highly recommend this movie, and I think you could probably watch it in the middle of a sunny afternoon and still be thoroughly creeped out by it.Vollständige Rezension lesen
Love this film! Actually named one of my kids after a character [read the book back in the 70's]. Very happy to have it on my collection.
