This is a classic on the subject. Beautiful black and white photos that do the subject justice as opposed to color photos in my opinion. I bought a first printing in approx.1980 but lost it to a loan out. I liked it so much that I just had to replace it. I actually like the new updated cover better also. It's more of an art type of book rather than a text book of many, many joints.

Brought two copies (one new, one used)as a gift for an arquitect friend who is a rabid fan of woodwork, and for myself, out of curiosity based on prevous rather superficial acquaintance with some aspects of Japanes culture. Personally I found the book incredibly interesting despite the fact that as a laymnan (I can hardly tell a hammer from a nail)I literally did not understand the meaning of most of the words and terms used throughout the book.Nevertheless there is a lot you can glimpse at about the culture, psychology, history and some factual cuties like that in terms of construction and safety wood turns out to be better than steel when facing a fire.
Interesting how Korea and China influenced Japanese construction techniques. Basic structure joinery explained with minimal/no use of iron?steel fasteners to hold it together. Also covers a bit about how, as wood supplies changed, methods changed also.
